JoAnn Urofsky

Director since 2010. JoAnn Urofsky is the chief executive of WUSF Public Media providing the Tampa Bay region with complete public media services; public radio and four digital TV channels, 2 HD Radio channels also streamed online, Radio Reading Service and wusf.org. Ms. Urofsky’s early career was in commercial radio in central Pennsylvania and West Virginia.  Since then, she has worked in nearly every aspect of public radio in Florida, Syracuse, and Charleston, West Virginia including stints as a reporter, Morning Edition host, producer, program director and station manager.  She joined WUSF Public Media in 1992 as station manager of its WSPF-FM in Fort Myers.  In 1997 she went to WUSF-FM in Tampa as station manager and was promoted to general manager of WUSF Public Media in 2002. Producing significant journalism is a major priority.  As one of 5 CPB-funded local journalism centers, WUSF is working collaboratively with 5 other stations to create multimedia content on healthcare. Under Ms. Urofsky, WUSF Public Media has been a technology leader; the first public radio station in the country to broadcast HD radio and to premiere conditional access technology. WUSF is a beta-test site for PBS’ NGIS. In November, Ms. Urofsky concluded 7 years as an NPR board member; 3 years as vice chair. She’s on the executive committee of the Beta Station Group and University Licensee Association, the NETA member services committee and sustainability committee of the AGC and has served on numerous public radio boards and committees. As a member of the executive committee of the Tampa Bay Partnership, she was honored for negotiating a memorandum of understanding between economic development and corporate partners. Ms. Urofsky has her B.S. from Penn State in communications, and holds an M.A. from Syracuse University in broadcasting.  She studied non-profit management at the University of South Florida and is a graduate of Leadership Florida.  Ms. Urofsky serves on the PBS Station Services,  National Policy Advisory and Corporate Support Advisory  Committees.
