PBS AWARDS

PBS is a consistent leader in television’s most prestigious competitions. Some of the major awards PBS received in the 2009-2010 awards year include:

  • 13 Daytime Emmys (36th Annual), putting PBS atop all broadcast and cable networks for children’s programming for the 12th consecutive year. SESAME STREET was honored with four Emmys and also was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. PBS received a total of 47 nominations in 2009 — more nominations than NBC, CBS and all cable networks.


  • 9 Primetime Emmys (61st Annual), including seven awards for MASTERPIECE CLASSIC “Little Dorrit.” The miniseries won more awards than any other single program, including the award for Outstanding Miniseries. AMERICAN MASTERS was honored with the Outstanding Nonfiction Seriesaward and GREAT PERFORMANCES also won a Primetime Emmy. PBS received 26 nominations, more than A&E, Bravo, Discovery and History combined.


  • 6 News & Documentary Emmys (30th Annual), more than any broadcast or cable channel, and equaling or topping all competitors for the ninth year in a row. FRONTLINE was honored with two awards, and POV, NOVA, BILL MOYERS JOURNAL and ILLICIT: THE DARK TRADE each won one award. PBS received more nominations, 38, than any other network for the sixth straight year.


  • 6 George Foster Peabody Awards (68th Annual), more than any other media organization, for DEPRESSION: OUT OF THE SHADOWS; INDEPENDENT LENS “King Corn” and “Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita”; NOVA “Ape Genius”; P.O.V. “Campaign”; and WASHINGTON WEEK WITH GWEN IFILL & NATIONAL JOURNAL.


  • 3 Golden Globe Nominations (2010) for MASTERPIECE CLASSIC “Little Dorrit,” MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! “Wallander” and MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY “Endgame.”


  • 2 Academy Award Nominations (82nd Annual) for POV “Food, Inc.” and POV “The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers.”


  • 2 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards (2010) for FRONTLINE/WORLD “Children of the Taliban” and POV “The Judge and the General.”


  • 3 NAACP Image Award Nominations (41st Annual) for INDEPENDENT LENS “Crips and Bloods: Made in America,” BILL COSBY: THE MARK TWAIN PRIZE and MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY “Endgame.”


  • 2 Emmys for Business and Financial Reporting (7th Annual). In 2009, PBS received four nominations; FRONTLINE and the NEWSHOUR each won an Emmy. Additionally, Paul Kangas and Linda O’Bryon, of NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT, were presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards.


  • 1 ALMA Award (2009), awarded to Latino Public Broadcasting for the development, support and promotion of Latino-themed documentaries on public television.


  • 1 Imagen Award (24th Annual) for A CLASS APART: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE in the Best Documentary for Televisioncategory. PBS received four nominations.


  • 3 IDA Documentary Awards (2009), including awards for films airing on POV, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and INDEPENDENT LENS. PBS received 12 nominations.


  • 3 Writers Guild of America Awards (2009) for FRONTLINE “Bush’s War,” NOVA “Secrets of the Parthenon” and BILL MOYERS JOURNAL “Yankee Stadium and the New Gilded Age.” In 2010, PBS received 15 nominations – more than any other broadcast TV network or cable channel.


  • 1 Screen Actors Guild Awards Nomination (16th Annual) for Kevin Kline in GREAT PERFORMANCES “Cyrano de Bergerac.”


  • 1 Television Academy Honors Award (2nd Annual) for Television With a Conscience for MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY “God on Trial.”


  • 15 Parents’ Choice Awards for Television (2009), including gold awards for AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES 2, BETWEEN THE LIONS and NATURE “The Wolf That Changed America.”


  • 5 Parents’ Choice Awards for Websites (2009), including gold awards for PBS Parents and PBS KIDS Island.


  • 4 Webby Awards (13th Annual). FRONTLINE/World received two Webbys and a People’s Voice Award in the Online Film & Video category. RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY won a People’s Voice Award in the Website category. PBS received five nominations.
