PBS ONLINE WEB SITES RECEIVE THREE "WEBBY" AWARD NOMINATIONS

Awards to be Presented June 5 in San Francisco

ALEXANDRIA, VA., April 8, 2003 -- PBS.org sites received three nominations for one of the Internet's most celebrated awards -- the Webby, given by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. Only one other nominee -- the BBC -- received as many nominations in today's announcement. The Webby Award is the leading international honor for achievement in technology, creativity and individual achievement.

Receiving two nominations were WGBH Interactive's Commanding Heights Online -- www.pbs.org/commandingheights -- (in the Best Practices and Broadband categories) and one for KQED/WGBH's FRONTLINE/World -- www.pbs.org/frontlineworld -- (in the Television category). PBS sites have won more Webby awards in the television category than any broadcast or cable network.

The Webby Award nominees and winners are selected by members of The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences from the best sites entered through the call for entries and sites encountered in the judges' experiences. Evaluated against six criteria (content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, and overall experience), sites undergo a rigorous six-month, three-tiered process to win the coveted Webby Award. Judges will choose a winner in 30 categories, ranging from Activism and Film to Government & Law and Spirituality.

Among the judges for this year's Webby awards are musicians Beck and David Bowie, Internet co-creator Vint Cerf, political columnist Arianna Huffington, "Smart Mobs" author Howard Rheingold, "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, Real Networks CEO Rob Glaser, The Body Shop president Anita Roddick, and Oracle chairman Larry Ellison.

The 7th Annual Webby Awards will take place June 5 in San Francisco (location to be announced). More information about the awards is available at www.webbyawards.com/.
