Zahra Moussavi
Julie Costanzo

Holly takes a spin with Zahra Moussavi, tour-guide-turned-taxi-magnate.

Holly: What do you like about driving?

ZM: The calmness it gives me and the service I give to the people, in reality it is the service we offer to the people and the peace of mind we give to the familes that gives me peace.

Holly: How many hours a day do you work?

ZM: We work 24 hours a day and have very little rest.

Holly: Are your kids OK with the fact that you may not be able to attend to them too much?

ZM: Well, as my home is near I stop by and check on them all the time. I take my kids to school and put the food out in the morning, meaning that I don't leave my household chores undone so there could be any complaints.

Holly: Has anyone from the family ever complained?

ZM: No they all cooperate.

Holly: We had a lot of fun, you and your co-workers were very warm, you have fun and laughs, no?

ZM: Yes.

Holly: Do the ladies have families?

ZM: They're all married and have children.

Holly: How old are the older drivers?

ZM: There are a couple who were born around 1319 [1940].

Holly: How old are they?

ZM: Seventy-one

Holly: In America people retire at 65

ZM: No here they like to work, of course this job is more fun for women because they drive around and they work in three, seven-hour shifts so it's not too tiring, meaning that the work pressure is on me because I have to be around 24 hours a day and supervise.

Holly: Does your husband support you in this job?

ZM: Yes.

Holly: Meaning to come and help you at work?

ZM: The way husbands can help is through the family, meaning the nights that I'm not there, he fills the void and at times he helps in household chores. Otherwise the job is just mine. Because it is not his — he does something else.

Holly: What did you do before driving?

ZM: For six years, I was the manger of a pilgrimage tour to Syria.

Holly: Which job do you like better?

ZM: Both jobs are interesting, both are serving the people, there's no difference, but in this job, there are others who are making a living from it as well. Here, jobs have been created for other women and that satisfies me — in the other job, only I benefited.
