Viewing the Video Clips

To view the American Field Guide video clips you must have either the Real Media Player or the Windows Media Player installed in your computer. You can download and install the latest versions of the players from their web sites.

Download the RealMedia Player

Download the WindowsMedia Player

Note: If you already have a player installed and are upgrading to a new version, it is recommended that you first remove any other versions installed on your system.

Browser Requirements

The American Field Guide site is best viewed with the latest version of either Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.

Screen Size: This site is designed for screen resolutions of either 800x600 pixels. On a 640x480 screen, the graphics and text will appear larger but you will see less at one time without scrolling. On a 800x600 screen, you should be able to see most of the main screens without scrolling. To change your screen resolution, look for "Display Properties" or "Monitors & Sound" in your Control Panel.

Font Size: The AFG site is best viewed when your default font is set to "Medium" on Internet Explorer or Times New Roman size 12 on Netscape Navigator. If your font size is set significantly larger or smaller than these, you may experience some distorted graphics.

Search Tips

We have designed the site to make it easy for you to access and view the more than 1,000 video clips in our collection. You can browse the topic categories or use the search box to search the collection by keyword, topic, or state.

  • To start your video search, enter a keyword or topic in the search box. If you enter more than one word, the search engine will retrieve video clips that contain every word entered.
  • To exclude a word from your search, type AND NOT before the word you want excluded (for example: mountain AND NOT rockies).
  • Use the Topic and State drop-down lists alone, or in combination with keywords, to help focus your search.
  • To search for an exact phrase, enclose it in quotation marks (e.g. "fluffy bunny rabbit").
  • If you enter search terms in all lower-case letters, the search will return results without case sensitivity. If you capitalize any letters, results will be returned that only match the case entered.
  • If you are conducting a keyword search and do not find any matching results, try searching on alternative forms of the word such as singular or plural forms.
  • One of the most powerful features of the AFG keyword search is that it searches the video transcript text and locates the point in the transcript where your keyword appears. You can review the transcript in the popup box and skip directly to a specific point in the video by clicking the "Go" button. Or you can view the entire clip by clicking on the small video clip image.
