US IN HAWAII
By 1820, American missionaries from New England arrive in Hawaii, paving the way for future US dominance. Chinese sugar masters arrive in 1830 with knowledge of how to make sugar from the cane syrup. Five years later (1835) the first American sugar plantations are established in Hawaii.

On Jan. 17,1893, under the influence of the American sugar planters in Hawaii, the US government overthrows Hawaii’s Queen and sends in US Marines to suppress protests.

US IN PHILIPPINES
US defeats Spain in Spanish American War and Treaty of Paris.
December1898 ending the war, gives US the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, Philippines and control over Cuba.

In the Philippines, Filipino nationalists immediately launch a second “War of Independence” against US occupation - what US authorities call the "War of Insurrection".
