Opening Segment for Art:21
Program 6: Loss & Desire
The opening segment for Program 6: Loss & Desire begins with four-time Oscar-nominated actress Jane Alexander seated before a mirror in her glamorous dressing room, reflecting on the emotions that motivate some of the characters she has brought to life on stage and screen. Having played remarkable women, such as Joan of Arc and Madame Ranevsky in “The Cherry Orchard,” who are driven to action by loss and desire, Alexander notes that as an actress this emotional range is “familiar territory.” Like drama, music, and literature, contemporary art has the power to evoke thoughts about loss and desire. Alexander introduces the artists featured in the hour, commenting that they create works that are “both personal and universal.”
