"When I first learned of the Art:21 program…I was thrilled
and hopeful that the producers would see their importance to the
education community. Now three years later, I can say that Art:21
has more than lived up to the promise, both in the show and especially
in the peripheral materials. In fact, I believe the web site is
the key resource on the internet today for teachers willing to bring
the leading artists of the day into their classroom."

welcome to education
Welcome to Education at Art:21! The Art:21 series
and accompanying educational materials have been developed to familiarize
teachers and students with the work of living artists, to provoke critical
thinking and problem solving, to present creative role models, to bridge
diverse subject areas, and to inspire new ways of teaching and learning
through the study and appreciation of contemporary art. The arts of our
time is relevant to all subject areas and disciplines, providing teachers
and students with a rich resource through which to consider new ideas,
rethink the familiar, and enhance visual literacy.

education online
THE ONLINE LESSON LIBRARY
The Online Lesson Library hosts a wide range of thematic lesson
plans introducing contemporary art for visual art, language arts,
and social studies classrooms. This growing archive of lessons supports
interdisciplinary teaching through references to literature, the
humanities, visual literacy, popular culture, history, and current
events. Links to national and state education standards, video clips,
and slideshows enrich each lesson. Written by teachers and education
professionals from around the country, each of the lessons is designed
to serve as a flexible and dynamic resource for teachers. Educators
are encouraged to select the activities, materials, and ideas that
meet their individual interests and needs—an entire thematic
unit of study, a relevant hands-on project, or compelling questions
to foster dialogue and engagement with ideas that are appropriate
for their students.
STUDENT ART PROJECTS
Teachers are invited to post lesson plans and examples of student
work, based on their use of the broadcast series and curriculum
materials. Designed as a site for sharing ideas, these pages offer
viewers the opportunity to find inspiration in the work of teachers
and students from across the country.
TEACHING MATERIALS
To support the use of the series and the Online Lesson Library in
the classroom, Art21 produces a range of educational materials available
to teachers. Download copies of the Season One, Two, and Three Educators’
Guides, and learn about slide and digital images, School Arts magazine
features, and Art:21 companion books, videos, & DVDs.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Featuring workshops and partnerships that bring contemporary art to local
communities of educators, professional development is the bridge between the
educational materials produced through the series and their implementation
in classrooms and museums.
GLOSSARY
A comprehensive resource of relevant terminology and definitions
to accompany the study of contemporary art in the classroom and
beyond. Use the glossary to navigate the site or to build vocabulary.
