In February of 2003, Director of Education and Outreach, Jessica Hamlin traveled to the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Sedalia, MO. Hamlin was invited by the Daum to present a workshop for teachers as well as facilitate a public screening the Art:21 series. After brief introductions to each of the featured artists, students from the local community college along with Sedalia residents watched the artist segments presenting Maya Lin, James Turrell, Matthew Barney, Louise Bourgeois, Shahzia Sikander and Richard Serra. A question-and-answer session followed the screening. Audience members were curious about how the featured artists were selected and were excited by the inclusion of architecture and public art along with sculptors and painters.

The accompanying teacher workshop brought local teachers from surrounding counties and communities to find out more about the contemporary artists featured in the series. A slide presentation introduced the use of contemporary art and contemporary issues in the classroom. Teachers described their concerns about provocative subject matter and apathetic students, their lack of resources and lack of access to new materials—especially about contemporary artists, for the classroom, as well as a frustration with finding tools to address both technical skills and conceptual ideas in the classroom. After presenting an overview of the Art21 series and artists, the teachers watched the Season Two segment on the artist Kara Walker and held a frank conversation about the importance and difficulty of introducing provocative subject matter into the classroom. Connecting Walker's artwork to issues of conflict, the teachers discussed ways to begin broaching the issues that are ever-present in the classroom, racism, violence, sexuality, etc. and creating a safe and effective forum for addressing them with students.
