Morganton's Etta Baker worked in a textile mill, raised nine children and didn’t perform on stage until she was sixty years old. However, her distinctive finger picking style remains a source of inspiration for such artists as Taj Mahal and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Recognized as a preeminent guitar player of the Piedmont Blues, she recorded and performed until her death in 2006, at 93.
