Franklin’s son William was appointed royal governor of New Jersey by King George III. Some people were upset by the appointment, which usually went to a British citizen, rather than to a colonist. He remained as governor for 14 years, until he was arrested on the eve of the American Revolution for remaining loyal to the British Crown.
