Franklin spent two months in Germany in 1766, but his connections to the country stretched across a lifetime.

• Along with the British, there were many German immigrants in Pennsylvania. In 1732, Franklin published the first German-American newspaper, the Philadelphische Zeitung. He also published the first German hymnbook printed in America.

• Franklin declared a debt of gratitude to German scientist Otto von Güricke for his early studies of electricity.

• Franklin co-authored the first treaty of friendship between Germany and America in 1783.
