new york city

Franklin made numerous trips to New York City and the colony of New York throughout his life.

• When he ran away from Boston in 1723, Franklin originally planned to settle in New York, but discovered that there were no printing jobs to be had in a city of Dutch merchants.

• In 1742, Franklin sponsored James Parker in a printing venture in New York City, which proved highly profitable for both men.

• In 1743, Franklin began publishing the New York Gazette as a silent partner with James Parker.

• In 1747, Franklin traveled to the colony of New York to negotiate with the New York governor for the sale of cannons to Philadelphia.

• In 1754, Franklin attended a conference in Albany, at which he presented his Albany Plan—the first plan to unite the colonies for mutual defense.
