• In 1753, Swedish scientist Georg Wilhelm Richmann was killed by lightning in St. Petersburg while trying to duplicate Franklin’s experiments with lightning.

• In 1789, Russia honored Franklin’s scientific contributions by electing him to the Russian Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg.
