• While Franklin was Minister to France, he enlisted the Spanish to provide financial aid to the Americans during the Revolutionary War. Franklin later refused to give up the Mississippi River to Spain as a way of repaying the Spanish for their help during the war.

• In 1783, Franklin attended the signing of the preliminary articles of the Anglo-French and Anglo-Spanish armistice.

• In 1784 Franklin was elected to membership in the Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid.
