• While Franklin was living in Paris, the Papal Nuncio consulted with him
about the organization of the Roman Catholic Church in America.
• Franklin recommended that John Carroll become head of Catholic Church in
America. In 1776, Franklin journeyed to Canada in the company of John Carroll,
a Roman Catholic priest. Based in part on positive things Franklin said about
him, the Papal Nuncio named Father Carroll to the position of Superior of
the Catholic Church in America in 1784.
