Joseph Blatt
Co-Executive Producer
Joseph Blatt has created nationally broadcast public television programs for more than 15 years. Before coming to Blackside in 1993, Blatt was an executive producer of Scientific American Frontiers, a monthly primetime public television series featuring stories on natural history, medicine, technology, human behavior and general science. For WGBH Boston's NOVA science series, Blatt produced, wrote and directed An Astronaut's View of Earth, showcasing the finest of the astronauts' "home movies" shot aboard space shuttles. In another NOVA episode, Race for the Top, Blatt documented international competition among physicists to find a fundamental but elusive particle called the top quark.
With major funding from the Annenberg/CPB Project, Blatt executive produced three television series on mathematics and statistics, each consisting of 26 half-hour programs. The first, For All Practical Purposes, is an overview of current trends in discrete mathematics, including management science, social choice theory, geometry and computer science. Blatt also co-authored a companion book to this series. Against All Odds is a more detailed treatment of descriptive and inferential statistics. The third Annenberg/CPB series, In Simplest Terms, is an instructional telecourse on college algebra.
Before undertaking these projects at the Massachusetts-based Chedd-Angier Production Company, Blatt worked at WGBH Boston, where he produced The Captioned ABC News, the first nightly national news program broadcast over PBS. He also developed new technology projects for WGBH, including a teletext service and experimental videodiscs.
Blatt's first national television production was a 1978-79 series on disabled children called Feeling Free, for which he also co-authored a trade book.
Blatt concentrated in American and English history and literature at Harvard College, where he graduated cum laude in 1970. He also holds a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he now teaches a course on television and human development.
