The Final Days of AutodeskJohn Walker was founder and longtime CEO of Autodesk, the company that pretty much invented computer-aided design software for PCs. He used to write long memos to the company staff that were eventually combined in an amazing book called The Autodesk Files. It is well worth reading as a look inside a high tech company. Walker eventually left Autodesk and moved to Switzerland where he lives today. I always figured it was some kind of tax scam. After his departure from the company he wrote one last memo: The Final Days of Autodesk. This 43-page document describes how a company can be totally dominant in its market one day and out of business the next. Bill Gates eventually read it and was so concerned by the parallels between Autodesk and Microsoft that he has used this memo since then as his guide for dealing with competition -- by destroying it.
