Huh? There are no women in web design? But—scratches head—am not I a woman? Well, that would be a yes, however, if you attend one of the many web conferences or read about the "rock star" web designers—Eric Meyer, Jeffrey Zeldman, Jason Santa Maria, Dan Cederholm—often women aren't mentioned or included. If they are, it is one of the same handful always mentioned—Veerle Pieters, Molly E. Holzschlag (Molly) or Larissa Meek anyone? I don't begrudge Veerle, Molly or Larissa their due but I would love to see a few more names become common-place because there are some wonderful women out there shaping the web. I work with some of them.
I guess I could ask the typical questions of why there seems to be some invisible boundary women can't cross in web design. Is it because women are afraid of the "technical aspects" of it? Is it because women tend to be the caregivers in a family, so they don't have time to speak at conferences? Are we not being asked to speak at conferences? Are we too scared or meek to toot our own horns? Is it because the "man" is trying to keep us down (the was a joke by the way)?
I could pose many more questions and could even speculate about why this seems to be an issue but…I won't. I no more have the answers to these questions than anyone else, I only have opinions and opinions aren't facts—as much as some people would want you to believe they are. What I do know is that every generation—no matter the gender—needs someone of their own gender to look up to. Young women need to see that they too can become successful in their field if they chose web design as that field.
All that said, there is good news, despite the numbers, web conference events are attempting to be more inclusive and we're seeing at least one or two women as guest speakers at a majority of them. So I figured in celebration of Paper Clip Day (I know it was in May but I missed it), I would like to steer you towards some female web designers who are doing good work.

Are there some fabulous female web designers out there that I've missed? I'm sure there are but please feel free to do some shout outs in the comments.

This reminds me of one of my favorite Onion pieces: Man Finally Put In Charge Of Struggling Feminist Movement.
More seriously, I think the issue may be that the most privileged members of a society are the most enabled to venture forth into new frontiers where self-promotion is one of the biggest elements of success. In general, the most privileged folks tend to be rewarded for putting themselves out there boldly and aggressively, where less privileged folks are thought of as being discourteous or aggressive or arrogant for doing some of the same things.
These are some beautiful sites. I particularly like that animated header atop Ali Felski's page.
@Nate:
I hate the idea that women are somehow shooting ourselves in the foot because we aren't chest beaters. Of course, I can just see the backlash now if women were to promote themselves more aggressively. The "b" word would probably be bandied about liberally.
As far as the sites, they all have elements that I really like. I particularly like how Adelle Charles unabashedly puts herself out there.
Yeah, maybe I shouldn't be too quick to theorize. The truth is that I have very little idea how to address the question you raise in your post. I have personally known more web designers who were women than I have who were men, but there's no denying that the vast majority of the names I know from the books and blogs I read are those of men.
What do you think is the best response to all this? Consciously broaden one's pool of reading and promotion? (That's not a bad idea. Maybe I'll add some of the sites you reference to my RSS.)
@Nate:
I don't have the answer anymore than you do unfortunately. My experience is the same as yours—I know more women than men in web design, although working at PBS has evened that out a bit.
I think some of it has to do with the overall male to female ratio in the workforce. It would be logical to theorize that men are still "in charge" of most things so women don't get the opportunity to rise above that proverbial glass ceiling—no matter the industry—because the seats beyond that ceiling are overwhelmingly occupied by men.
As far as web conferences are concerned, they are mostly attended by men so they want to see their peers on the panel—i.e. other men—so maybe the folks that arrange and run them cater to their audience. One could theorize that if more women were on the panels, more women would attend the conferences to see their peers speak.
In the end, it doesn't matter who creates a beautifully designed web site but it is a vexing issue when it comes to the disparity of visibility. It would be nice for younger women interested in the industry to have some female role models.

I ask different questions, none of which has answers to it yet, but the comments have certainly been very enlightening. Feel free to comment on there, too. :) I plan on making an update to the post based on the responses plus some additional conversations I've had with intelligent and successful women in tech.

Some other excellent female web designers who deserve to be on this list:
There are so many great women designers out there (I've been a fan of Swiss Miss for a while.)
At least where I am (S Fla) there's PLENTY of women in web design. Fewer women in back-end/development. And of course that's where the money gets better *sigh* -- so maybe that's partly where the sense of imbalance comes from.
First, let me say that I am truly honored to be compared to such wonderful designers.
I attended the Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia on a full fine arts scholarship with a major in illustration and graphic design in the late 80's. We didn't have computers, let alone any sort of web design courses, so the thought of doing something "technical" was not even an option. After spending years with traditional typesetting and paste-up, I bought an Apple Computer in 1992 and taught myself desktop publishing and multimedia with Macromind Director (yes, Macromind). Around 1994, I started designing websites while I still designed for print. After a few years, I switched completely to interactive design because I saw the writing on the wall for my career. Without interactive knowledge, I wouldn't be a designer today. I saw a lot of my fellow women designers drop away because they refused to learn anything other than print. So, needless to say, it's been quite a long journey.
I'd also like to stress that I consider myself a designer and not a developer. I am responsible for strategy, concepting, planning and designing websites. While I'm pretty good at front-end development, that's never been my focus. I've been doing this long enough to know that it's just not a good use of a designer's time. Designers are right brain and developers are left brain. I prefer to mentor people who want to focus on enhancing their natural talents rather than try to be a jack-of-all trades. I like to think this is the reason for my success.
I was just named Executive Interactive Creative Director of my agency. A title like that only comes after many, many years of understanding both the traditional and interactive sides of the business. I am grateful that I have made it this far, but it hasn't been an easy road. It has been almost 20 years of working at least 10 hour days. It takes a strong person to make it that far without getting burned out. I've seen a lot of my peers drop off as the years and demands on their careers became even greater. It's no wonder there aren't more women designers. There isn't much room for having a life and a family when you are expected to stay on top of your game day in and day out. From an agency's point of view, there's always some younger, cheaper hybrid designer/developer waiting in the wings. I'd say agency life, or lack thereof, is the number one reason women don't stick with their careers long enough to get recognition. Some days, I would give it all up to be home at a reasonable hour or have my weekends to myself. Other days, I am reminded by sites like this that I still have a long way to go to reach the goals that I set for myself more than 20 years ago.
Thanks for including me!
Some of the early women in web design worked for a number of years from the later 1990s to early 2000s. Then, some, got married and had a family. But the technology kept moving forward and, if you were out for a even 1-4 years, you could miss some important changes you needed to know. It was also a crazy intense start up environment with people working into the night and even weekends. Crazy. Many, men and women, were glad to leave that world the older they got. Also, many of the early web sites were sold, merged, or died. When that happened, many people, women too, left for more stable employment or, had a family. Some got rich. Most were just laid off.
Now, to a somewhat greater degree, you can work for a stable web site (like PBS perhaps) and stick around for a year, 4 years, or longer. So young designers (the majority of which are now and have been women in most design programs) can become web designers and, stick around.
That's my take on some of the history but, of course, there are many individual experiences that might be different.
I would be interested in knowing if anyone left web design to raise a family but have now come back to it. What were the main issues? Did you continue to keep up on the technology? With the majority of unemployed people now men, this information will be less about the sex of the person but how to manage leaving and come back to an industry you leave for a variety of reasons.
I would also like to add Amy Hoy to the list, although she's more into application design, but still some very nice interfaces and illustrations.
I know there are great women designing beautiful Web content (I am too one of them), but really the amount of female designers compared to male is pathetic. Women hold a huge demographic as Web users, so it only seems fitting that equal proportion should be designing the Web too. The same phenomena is happening in the video game industry. It is estimated that females make up 40% of video gamers, but only 12% of the designers are female.
You're right though, it starts with recognizing and representing the females that are out there first. Then hopefully other creative forces will come out and feel the industry is more inviting to our gender.
Great post, we need more proactive acknowledgments like this.
Great article! I wanted to comment on what Jamie said though.
Yes, women do hold a large demographic of web users and aren't nearly as well represented as men, but I don't think that is the fault of a particular sex or bias.
I think that web design/development is one of those things that you either love fully or hate to the boring core. In my personal experiences with women, you gals don't like to sit still for long periods of time, and to me is the most obvious reason you're not represented as much as you'd like.
Yes, that is a huge generalization but my point is that there could be just as many women in the industry as men but most women choose more stable career paths. I don't think any one sex is better at this or anything like that, I just think women don't usually choose the sedentary unstable lifestyle men do.
I am a huge fan of all the women on this list (especially Adelle), and many many more web designers I have been lucky enough to have found and seen their work. I think women are a big part of the design world, and with time that will only grow.
Thanks for asking such important questions and bringing this issue to light. Being a multimedia designer myself, I have attended many design conferences and have to agree, female participation is always minimal.
Larissa Meek? Eh.
@Kim:
Thanks for the great insight into your career. As many of us know, it takes a while to climb the ladder of success and for some women, juggling family and career ambitions can be a struggle of priorities. It's a shame that women are put in the position to make those kinds of decisions, where often men are not. When a man comes to work and declares his wife is pregnant, you don't have hear people questioning whether or not he'll come back to work in nine months.
@J:
You bring up a particular point that I often think about when my birthday roles around--do designers have a shelf life? I try not to worry about it too much but it does seem to be a young person's career at times.
@Soleone, Jamie, Derek & Ginette:
Thanks so much for your comments. You all bring some interesting points to the debate or additions to the list.
@Philippe:
Think what you will about Larissa Meek but she is still one of the more well-known female designers out there.
From a man :Good post, I have often asked myself the same question, "where are all the female web designers?" I know a lot of woman who are Graphic Designers, or Lecturers that teach design or code, but where are the industries female designers.
I would like to thank you for highlighting the ones you did, but it seems odd to me that there are thousands of woman in all manners of design and that lots of sectors have now turned to web as the new medium, yet I would be seriously struggling to think of a studio I know of that has a female web designer/ developer.
It’s clearly not just a thing in Scotland, which much is clear by this post. I think woman should shout out more, do the full "look at me thing", they have added a perspective to the Graphics industry so why not the web?
Who knows, maybe in 5 years we will be asking where are all the men in uberhub communication Design (or what ever the next big thing is for our sector)
An ever-important issue, and a nice showcase of excellent designers. I don't consider myself a web designer so much as a developer and teacher, just for the record. I have studied design and have a deep understanding of design principles but I have none of the applied visual design skills that the women in this showcase so clearly and impressively do.
But being a great designer/developer and stepping out into the public spotlight are two different skillsets. What's more, the lifestyle of a public speaker can be extremely demanding on individuals, friendships, and families, so life situations really influence who ends up spotlighted.
In my case, I drove my career hard and aggressively, and never held back in any way. That got me attention, but I also have had to compromise other aspects of life. It's always a trade-off.
Thanks for the look into some fantastic new designers - more posts and showcases like this rock mighty - and help to mitigate the "where are the women?" phenomenon.
There is also now a "geek" speaker registry for women, meant to connect women who speak on all aspects of Web design and related technologies to event coordinators. This is a great initiative, and can be found at http://www.geekspeakr.com/.
I encourage all women interested in public speaking to put up a profile there, and also spread the word about the site. Gift the URL to event coordinators should you go to an event. Email the info to event coordinators when you don't see enough diversity in a speaker lineup. Be proactive. That's what works.
I also encourage all people to consider not only gender, but race/nationality into the mix. How many black men or women are recognized? Hispanic? And so on. While we do lack diversity in this industry for the most part, there are more and more diverse professionals on the job. We need to see more faces on the stage, and hear a variety of voices. This creates the opportunity for the next generation of designers and developers to have role models, something that is also helpful in improving diversity, or certainly the awareness of it, in our profession.
With warm regards and thanks for the post,
Molly :)
@Molly:
Thanks so much for your comment. It's always interesting to get a peek into how women in the industry get to the position they're in. Though you don't design, you are still in a field that seems woefully underrepresented by anyone that isn't a white male (I think that captures just about everyone else who isn't represented).
I was discussing with some colleagues today how important for those of us who have been in the field for a bit to be seen for those coming behind us. I feel mentoring younger generations is a role too often overlooked by those who walk the path first. Maybe some of the women that see this post will go and register at the links you provided.
So many! Grace Smith, Niki Brown, Natalie Jost, Nikki Brion, Tanya Merone, Lelia Thomas, Teresa Watts, Cindy Li,
Gisele Jaquenod, Selene M. Bowlby, Dani McDaniel, Liz Andrade, and that's just the ones off the top of my head.
We are a growing number. I'm excited to see the differences in conference statistics this next year.
Nice write-up, but I also see most names here on this list that I have seen on endless lists before [these are all very talented women, don't get me wrong :)]. Does anyone not try to research and discover new talent out there ... and there are so many, believe me! I have been interviewing creatives on my blog for the past 9 months and out of the 18 odd interviews I have done, only 2 have been women [I am thinking outside the box and try to track down talents with potential and give them a medium to express themselves]. The two women I have interviewed have never had anything published about them, yet are amazingly talented and striking out on their own in the big bold world of design.
I wish more blogs and websites took the time out to discover fresh new work and fresh new faces instead of parading people who are already very well established all the time. It then becomes a case of the richer getting richer and nobody caring about the poor, metaphorically speaking :)
Perhaps it's because women think opinions can't be backed by facts.
