PBS iPad App Design

The PBS iPad video app is the first iPad application from PBS to be released. Since it's launch it's appeared on the iTunes top-pick lists including its most recent appearance as iTunes iPad App of the Week!

The project began as a way to extend with full-length videos to PBS viewers in a mobile environment experience. The app contains a mixture of previews, shorts and full-lengths, and a pretty cool schedules view where you can sort through upcoming shows throughout the week - based on your location.

The design strategy required a combination of clean UI visuals with unique iPad UX solutions. As web designers the challenges of designing for a browser is not such a new thing, even with the latest and greatest in design flexibility, we still know what were up against. The iPad platform on the other hand presents new challenges. Despite the challenges, its also very exciting to have a new platform to design within that hasn't really established a standard - other than constraints set forth by Apple. Almost every design decision has to consider both the vertical and horizontal views and how it affects the visual design for each view. We naturally looked around to see how others might be meeting these challenges, especially looking at apps that are specifically video oriented - no pun intended. Ultimately because of PBS's unique programming and program info - titles, air date, etc., we needed to explored specific ways to present all this in an easy to read design package.

From a visual perspective we wanted a clean, easy to navigate visual design for the PBS app. Our objective was to end up with a design that had visual dimension yet still would have subtle details that users would feel more than see. Our color palette also helps by using soft tones. Along with video comes a lot of unexpected colors throughout the experience, so our accent color needed to be noticeable yet not overpowering - turquoise was the color of choice. Subtle drop shadows and hairline details add to the smooth and crisp aesthetic. For the type we used PBS Explorer (a version of Interstate) for all the headlines and call out text.
