This summer, I was looking for an opportunity to immerse myself in a media production space in the heart of my hometown and was blessed with the opportunity to be chosen for a PBS internship!
In late 2017, Congress passed a tax bill that represented the most sweeping changes to the tax code in three decades. Like many nonprofit organizations, WXXI began hearing from donors with questions about how the changes might impact charitable giving and related deductions.
A recent opening in our Corporate Sponsorship Department created a challenge as well as an opportunity for us: how to recruit and hire someone given (a) the competitive employment environment (b) our salary limitations as a state agency and (c)the fact that we do not pay commissions?
The Problem: The WGBH Educational Foundation is Boston’s PBS member station. As an educational foundation, WGBH creates premier educational content for both broadcast on its two stations — WGBH and WGBX — as well as numerous non-broadcast educational initiatives. “Unfortunately, our prospective sponsors are not aware of the non-broadcast projects and we felt we were missing an opportunity for them to align with great content for the K – 12 audience beyond broadcast,” says Nancy Dieterich, the Managing Director of Local Corporate Sponsorship at WGBH.
“Anytime PBS or NPR are doing something they’re going to be promoting across the country, we certainly want to get on board with that,” says Susan Tran, Director of Corporate Support and Marketing Manager for Maine Public, a state network of public television and radio stations. Just a handful of weeks after tense mid-term elections along with incredibly crowded mailboxes and inboxes—politics will still be top of mind with many engaged donors—and common ground across the nation will likely remain elusive on many fronts.
I was born and raised on the banks of a river in the Deep South. For the majority of my life, all I have known is the bubble that I was born into. So when I decided to move over 600 miles away from everyone and everything I know, it was a bit of a leap. Now, almost 2 and a half months later, I cannot believe I ever questioned this opportunity.
