Cathi (Cate) is not afraid of noise. In her class, her students do the teaching and the room is abuzz with conversation and collaboration. “Kids are naturally curious,” says Cate. “When we, as educators, become facilitators for learning; when we know our students and their learning styles; when we are experts in our own curriculum; when we are risk-takers and able to be vulnerable in front of our students, the magic happens.  The kids become their own teachers.”  Cate does not assume all kids have access to technology in their homes—in her class, she is always cognizant of the digital divide. She believes technology is important but is careful to point out that digital innovation does not replace teaching, listening, and laughter - it amplifies it.

Fun Fact: Cate is a self-professed Nipponophile, having taught two years in the Japanese public school system.  Since 1990, she has helped coordinate one of the longest-running student exchanges between Des Moines and her sister city, Kofu, Japan.
