Are you living a heart-healthy lifestyle?

Heart disease takes an American life every 36 seconds--that's nearly 2,400 individuals each day. In fact, it is the number one killer of American women--specifically from African American and Latina descent.

The October premiere of The Mysterious Human Heart, written and directed by award-winning filmmaker David Grubin, is a three-part PBS series that explores the latest scientific, medical revelations and misconceptions about the human heart. Click below to watch the preview:

All three episodes are available to watch on the program's Web site. You can also tour an image of a 3-D heart and test your knowledge of this complex human organ by taking the Heart Quiz. Visit the Web site of the American Heart Association, one of the program's partners, where you can use the My Fats Translator to help plan healthy diets and meals.

You can also download an Outreach Toolkit to participate in a number of activities such as hosting screenings of the segments of The Mysterious Human Heart, holding panel discussions, and gathering support groups to demonstrate heart-healthy cooking techniques.

Bob that is pretty interesting to see - as of now every 36 seconds for an American is just awful - I hope that we can all find a way to be healthier and stay away from fast foods that plague the United States with obesity.

I tell my patients every single day, You need to lose weight!!! It is a constant struggle, people just cant seem to eat right. I went to France last month and guess what they are all skinny!! Because they don't eat fast food and they eat small portions. I really do feel for America, as a Certified Medical assistant I see a lot of patients who are in a lot of trouble because they simply cant eat right.

Red Meat and Heart Attacks

My father died from an heart attack. He did not eat any junk food but far too many steaks and red meat.

I learned the lesson the hard way and will make sure that I visit my doctor at least once a year for a checkup. I will also eat balanced food and not too much red meat. Follow my advice and do the same.

Health is vital to a nations nations security, economy and well being... It is Sad to See that there are people who die every 36 seconds in the greatest nation in the world... We need to stand up and make our people healthy again...

Healthy starts with kids!

I agree with the other comments...I believe it really starts with how we care for our kids. If we start them right eating healthy, it will give them good habits for when they are older!

Kids Are Key

I do agree that kids are key regarding setting up a healthy start for a healthy lifestyle.

But I'm not so sure that fats are the problem.

Unless you're talking about Omega-6 fats.

Personally, I think saturated fats, monounsaturated fats and Omega 3 fats are great.

And I've seen no evidence that they cause any heart issues.

Healthy habits

I definitely agree with instilling healthy habits in our children. But, it's never to late to make serious lifestyle changes for heart health. And it doesn't need to be difficult, life altering changes made over night. Simple, healthy habits built up overtime produce extraordinary results.
