Ask Lisa Henson
The Jim Henson Company’s Dinosaur Train pulls in to the PBS KIDS lineup this week to teach preschoolers about natural science, dinosaurs and their similarities to the animals of today. Following the success of Sid the Science Kid, Lisa Henson joined forces with Craig Bartlett (of Hey Arnold! fame) to produce the animated show that follows a curious Tyrannosaurus Rex named Buddy and his adopted Pteranodon family as they learn about the vast natural world that they live in. Watch Lisa and Craig talk about the series at SXSW.
Executive Producer Lisa Henson is our guest this week, taking questions about the new series. Henson has had an extensive career, developing films for Warner Bros., Columbia Pictures, the Weinstein Company, and of course the Jim Henson Company. Her work includes Lethal Weapon, Batman “Muppets’ Wizard of Oz,” and the highly anticipated film Fraggle Rock.
Watch previews of Dinosaur Train and leave your questions for Lisa below. I’ll select five for her to answer next week.

Questions for Lisa:
I loved dinosaurs as a child, and I very much like the insert of Dr. Scott the Paleontologist; approachable yet not 'goofy.'
Any thoughts about a female paleo or guests from Smithsonian assisting Dr. Scott with explanations? Maybe girls will imagine growing up to be scientists and doctors because of it.
BTW-I know computer animation has benefits, but puppets are tactile and breach the this world/their world dynamic. If Dr. Scott has a partner, why not a puppet?
New programing
Hi I an writing in regards to the new line up. I like Sid The Science Kid. I realize you need to change things around, but I would have liked newer content of Sid. Are you going to bring him back? Dinosaurs is okay but, I liked the interaction with the kids. I think it a great learning tool for kids on how they get along.
Dinosaurs
How is the animation done for this series? It looks really different from many other shows.
Ask Lisa Henson
Hi Lisa, this question regards more to The Jim Henson Company. I've noticed ever sense The Muppets were sold to Disney the company has been branching out to more newer projects for all different audiences. I remember the show Dinosaurs. I really miss that show. I though the company was really great working with the art form of satire. Will there ever be any more satirical projects like Dinosaurs? I've seen Tinseltown but that's more of an awareness about LGBT in a comical setting than satirical.
research on adopted children?
I like the aspect of the show that Buddy is a different species and is trying to understand more about his own species. I also really like that he seems so secure with being different, and the family is so loving in spite of his difference. Did you consult with experts on adoptive families, or do research on how to model successful blended/adoptive families?
Soundtrack!!
When will the Dinosaur Train soundtrack come out?! We LOVE the songs!!
On a related note, is music from the song Shut Up and Let Me Go, by the Ting Tings used? Sounds like it.
great show
I just want to say that I am completely impressed with this new show Dinosaur Train. You have managed to encompass everything my child loves! A show for a three year old boy who LOVES trains and has a growing affection for dinosaurs. I am sure there are also girls out there with the same affection. I am impressed with the content as well as the design of dinosaurs. As a student getting her PhD in literacy and communication- I think you have embodied so much with this show. I would LOVE to see a vocabulary component added at the beginning and the end of the show. Science is an area that elementary children (and on) struggle with comprehending- you use so many scientific words that I think it would just add to the emergent literacy and science aspects already embedded in the show.
Kudos!!
Ask Lisa Henson
When can we expect to see Dinosaur Train merchandise? Will there be stuff out in time for Christmas? How long will we have to wait for toys, dolls, books, CDs, DVDs and other goodies? What can we expect and wo will be making it?
Dinosaur Train Merchandise, books
I am also interested in whether there will be Dinosaur train merchandise for sale soon! My 4 year old daughter loves the show; she wasn't interested in dinosaurs at all prior to this (we took her to see fossils at a museum and she was more interested in the big ceiling fan!) She was adopted, from China, and I love the way you have handled the Buddy adoption story! My daughter says to tell you her favorite characters are Cory and Annie (so far!) Thank you! :)
We need toys on shelves by Christmas!!! lol
LIsa,
You have scored BIG with this show.
My goodness we all learn something every single epsiode!
NExt step: CHRISTMAS gifts for my 3 year old who is obssessed with your new show.
Are the characters and other show-related toys coming out soon?!?!
I hope so!
Constance
Dino Train
Yes I was also wondering when there will be DVDs to buy. My nephew loves this show.
Christmas Gifts
WOW!! Thoroughly Impressed and Amused! Both my son and I enjoy Dinosaur Train. He is a 4 yr/old who is obsessed with dinosaurs and this show is the highlight of his day. Thank You for projecting your visions and talent to PBS for us to enjoy. On another note I am a Mom who is in need of Christmas gifts. will there be anything available by Christmas 09?
Thank You
Jennifer
Learning alot
I'm a science content developer and I love this show ... and my 2 1/2 year old son does too. I'm impressed with treatment of the scientific method, the dinosaur content and drawing parallels to modern day animals. The concepts and vocabulary are very accessible and my son picks up a lot of it and likes to talk, wonder, guess and "have ideas" about dinosaurs. He points his finger up in the air and says ... I have an idea. And then we hear his idea.
I'd love to see a bit more geology integrated into the show - simple things like the water cycle or volcanoes. Sometimes there's apparent geology in the backgound and my son gets very excited about it.
I also love the songs, family / adopted buddy, sibling relationships, games and the doctor Scott inset (my 2.5 year old watches that as close as the rest of the episode).
Dinosaur Fan
I really enjoy your show Dinosaur Train, and I also enjoy dinosaurs as well. Each of the characters have a great personality and characteristic, and have wonderful colors. I can't wait for the merchandise. It must be fun and exciting to ride the dinosaur train and take the time tunnel to travel through time, to learn about new dinosaur species, their surroundings, and how they lived.
Any chance I can get a ticket to ride the dinosaur train?
mechandise
I would also like to know if you will be selling dinosaur train merchandise for Christmas. My 3 year old loves this show and has been asking me for a buddy toy. I really enjoy this program. It not only teaches about science but also incorporates social skills such as how to be tolerant of others.
Dinosaur train merchandise
My son loves the show. We watch nothing else now. When will toys be available? He is adopted and I appreciate the way you handled Buddy in the Rexville episode.
merchandise for Christmas '09
My son loves this show! Dinosaurs (and trains) are his passion-we have books, encyclopedia's, figures, DVR'd History Channel and PBS shows about dinosaurs; but what we don't have are Dinosaur Train toys. When I asked my son tonight what he wanted for Christmas, more specifically, what he wanted Santa to bring him, he told me, "Dinosaur Train toys". When I told him that Santa might not be able to do that, he told me not to worry, that Santa would bring him Dinosaur Train toys. I would like to know if I'm going to have a very sad little boy on my hands on Christmas morning. I really hope not because last year he wanted Bob the Builder toys and I couldn't find those anywhere either. (Apparently, Bob isn't really in demand any more, but my son had just discovered him and was really sad that Santa didn't bring him Bob toys.) I really hope that the DT toys will be out in time for Christmas this year. My son is going to stop having faith in Santa if he fails yet again! It's hard when that is all he wants from Santa. PBS-don't let me down!! Please!!
TOYS TOYS TOYS!!!!
My son LOVES Dinosaur Train and Sid the Science kid, but it seems to take so long for the toys to come out. With other brands, they have toys waiting to go when the show/movie airs. Why does it take so long? I would think especially with xmas coming you would have toys ready to roll!!!! My son is very much looking foward to a Sid the Science Kid microphone and any/everything Dinosaur Train. PLEASE HURRY!!!!!
Toys too
My daughter loves both Dinosaur Train and Sid the Science Kid also. She often asks for a Sid microphone that can echo words and has the laugh track. She too would love Dinosaur Train toys. Will it really be 2010 before merchandise (other than clothing) comes out?
Toys released LATE 2010?!?!
I just saw that Learning Curve has the rights to create the toys for Dinosaur Train and they won't be on the market until "late 2010". Why so late?! They really didn't expect this show to be a hit? They are really missing out on 2009 Christmas sales (I know I would have bought a ton for my 3 year old who is obsessed with this show!)
Christmas Gifts
My kids are addicted to Dinosaur Train...I Love It too!!!
They love the characters, the songs, the stories....and to top it off, they are learning so much!!! If not specifically about dinosaurs, then things like "listen to your body and go potty" or 'mommy, I used my sense of smell"!!!
Please tell me there will be Dinosaur Train toys and games available for Christmas....if not, Im almost more disappointed than my children will be.
Thanks in advance for your response!
Dinosaur train by Christmas
My son loves this show! I really hope there will be merchandise on shelves by Christmas. I would love to see a small scale model of the train. I would also love to see cake decorations and party themes. This show is a hit and I hope it is around for my next child to enjoy!
Dinosaur Train
My son has been addicted to your show since the beginning andthanks to DVR we watch at least 2 episodes a day...especially the infamous poop one! Thanks fro beringing something not only entertaining but very educational to the table. I also just wanted to say that thanks to the show I was able to answer a question on Jeopardy that I would not have already known! I would like to knowif htere is going to be merchandise available for Christmas as well??
Is Santa Going to Have Toys this Year???
Just like the rest, my 3 y.o. son is in love with the dinosaurs. He has learned so much - and impresses people with the word Giganotasaurous all of the time. We are in need of some toys - he told me he was asking Santa for the Conductor for Christmas. Hope Santa can come through :)
WE LOVE DINOSAUR TRAIN !!!!!
My two year old son doesn't understand why he can not watch Dinosaur Train 24/7. When its his night to pick the family movie, I have to break his heart and tell him we can't watch Dinosaur Train.
Kudos to you for such a wonderful program. The kids are learning so much about dinosaurs. I think I'm raising a couple of paleontologists.
I'd really love a Dinosaur Train video offer for the next PBS membership drive.
DINO TRAIN
My 3 year old son has fallen in love with this show. It is an amazing show and so educational. It may be the best learnng show I have ever seen fo kids ever.
Thank-you.
P.S. We are looking for DINO Train stuff for XMAS as well.
Toys!!!!!!! Where are they?
Same as everyone else,,,,,,, where can we buy the toy's! When & where? My 3 year old daughter loves trains & dinosaurs. This show is the best thing ever! I like it too :)
Please state as theory not fact. Not all believe the same thing.
Wondered if Doctor Scott could possibly state facts as theory instead of facts, for those who believe in creation as opposed to evolution. Our four year old loves the show, however, it's frustrating to always have to tell her that what he is saying is not fact, it's just what he believes and that we believe that God created the world differently.
I don't understand why the world has to present things in such a matter a fact way, when there are many who do not agree with the same beliefs. I hope that makes sense.
She prays each night for Dr. Scott, that he would find God and learn about how God created the world. :)
Genesis 1:24-25
[On the sixth day of creation] 24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.” And that is what happened. 25 God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
Job 40:15-24 (New Living Translation)
15 “Take a look at Behemoth,[a]
which I made, just as I made you.
It eats grass like an ox. 16 See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly. 17 Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together. 18 Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron. 19 It is a prime example of God’s handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it. 20 The mountains offer it their best food, where all the wild animals play. 21 It lies under the lotus plants,[b] hidden by the reeds in the marsh. 22 The lotus plants give it shade among the willows beside the stream. 23 It is not disturbed by the raging river,
not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it. 24 No one can catch it off guard or put a ring in its nose and lead it away.
