Ask PBS Parents

PBS Parents is a valuable source of education and caregiver information. A trusted asset to the PBS family of websites, it includes information on child development, early childhood education, media literacy and more.

This month, to help parents prepare their kids (and themselves) for the upcoming school year, PBS Parents has created School Rules!  This special section includes a Q&A with Devra Renner and Aviva Pflock from Parentopia.com, tips for starting the new school year off right, and strategies for working side by side with teachers to help maximize children's learning.  The site has a lot more information about children and school in its complete Going to School guide.

This week, we are pleased to feature the PBS Parents team in our “Ask…” series.  They have agreed to answer your questions about easing into the new school year.

Leave your questions for PBS Parents below, and I’ll select 5 good ones.  Check back next week to read the answers.

New School

My 8 year old is starting at a new school this year after a move across town this summer. How can I encourage her to make new friends while she longs for the familiarity of the old ones?

First Grade

My soon-to-be first-grader is a happy, friendly, free spirit BUT ... she is not an early riser. No amount of napping or early bedtime seems to change the situation. How do I deal with the daily "NO!! I'm not going!!"? Once she's up and moving, she's great, but oh what a journey to get there. Any suggestions? (For the record, her school does start early. She's got to be at the bus stop at 7:35.)

This is helping the parents!

As a parent, I really appreciate the efforts that you are trying to help the parents in terms of how to deal with their children especially those who are first time in parenthood. This has been teaching the parents as to what method of learning their child can be developed and to be prepared.

Thank a lot PBS parents!
