Insights into PBS programming and personalities

Ask PBS Video

April 2009 welcomed a new edition to PBS.org that has changed the way you can watch some of your favorite programs. The PBS online video portal features on-demand streaming of shows like “Tavis Smiley,” “Masterpiece,” “The NewsHour,” and “The Ascent of Money.” Recent additions to PBS Video include classic Julia Child shows and a showcase of Emmy-nominated programs.

Shows are being added all the time as new primetime shows are available. Everyday Food is the latest addition to the offering. You can even watch local station programming like Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Silent Invasion.” Upcoming specials like Latin Music USA will also be available post-broadcast.

We invited Eric Freeland and Matt Graham of our video team to take your questions about what’s coming to PBS Video. Feel free to let them know what you want to see in the video portal and ask them tough questions.

RSS Feeds

Huge fan of PBS and the sweet online video portal. Keep up the great work!

I was wondering if there were also show specific RSS feeds available. I use Google Reader all the time and was hoping to be alerted to new programs/episodes through that.

Let me know, thanks!

Start spreading the news (feeds that is)

Ask and you shall receive :-)

RSS feeds are now available on PBS Video. This was a top feature on our list and was just deployed yesterday!

captioning

I enjoy the video player very much. I watch American Experience when there are new episodes, Time Team America, History Detectives, Nova, Frontline, and Masterpiece Mystery!. I also enjoyed The Ascent of Money. The only thing I would suggest would be to provide a captioning option like Nova, because sometimes the only way I can really hear the shows is with headphones (which I don't like to wear)and captioning would be very beneficial to me and other folks with hearing problems.

Thanks!

Captioning

I agree with the captions request. Often things are mumbled and jumbled and captions make things a lot easier for me.

Wow - wonderful, and yes to captioning

This would be great. I don't have network TV of any sort (not antenna, cable, or satellite), and would love to be able to see some PBS on my computer (I do have DSL). I especially love Nature, Masterpiece, Mystery, but would love to have many other options. And captioning, please, as it makes it so much easier for me to understand the dialogues.

award-winning series

The award-winning reality series "Spy" was great when you featured it here in Seattle on KCTS-9 some years back.

Back then my reception was horrible and I only managed to catch a couple of the episodes of the spy training.

I've looked into purchasing a copy from overseas, but it's just well beyond my budget.

There's also a US version "Spymaster" I've only read about.

"MI-5" is another great series as a British spy drama.

MI-5

The series seemed to end abuptly a few weeks back...Danny was 'lost' from the cast of characters...with newer players making for interesting viewing...when can we expect it to resume?

Classic Programming

I think that PBS has done a wonderful job with its video portal. However, I would love to see more of your "Classic" programs available online. Sesame Workshop had done an excellent job of archiving old "Sesame Street" clips, and WGBH Boston has started making original archival footage available online, which is fantastic. The Learner.org website also has almost all of their programs available online, in a free, easy-to-find format. Even Hulu.com and Plex Media Player for Mac OS X offer viewers access to old PBS Programming from Carl Sagan's Cosmos and Scientific American Frontiers, to Independent Lens and Bill Moyers' Journal. That being stated, I would love to have access to old Children's Programming from the 1970's and 1980's (I am a Kindergarten Teacher in Astoria Queens, NY): Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, Reading Rainbow, 3-2-1 Contact, Square One TV, Tomes and Talismans, among others. Although somewhat dated, these programs can still be of use to an Elementary and/or Middle-School audience. Programs like Newton's Apple and Innovation from the 1980's, as well as old episodes of the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour would help to add insight to the current debate over our changing times. The only way anyone can watch these programs now would be through a visit to either their local library (if they're lucky) or the Paley Center for Media. These programs deserve to see the light of day, and the American people would definitely benefit from their reemergence on the world wide web. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

past children's programming

I agree with the above!

Masterpiece Theatre & Mystery Reruns!

Please re-run old Masterpiece & Mystery from the 70's, 80's and 90's. I began watching Upstairs, Downstairs as a kid and have watched both series through the years.

I would love to see you bring back the Morse series, Danger UXB, The Irish RM, Doctor Finlay, Dangerous Job for a Woman and many, many others!

Thank you PBS

Thank you PBS for representing the Muslim-American community.

I have enjoyed programs such as Muhammad(Peace Be Upon Him) and Islam: Empire of Faith -- just to new a few great programs.

Music programs

Would LOVE to have programs like "Live from Lincoln Center", "From the Top" and other live performances available as well! Some of these amazing concerts are geographically and financially unavailable to some people.
It would also be a great resource for struggle music teachers in our public school everywhere!

Thank you PBS Engage and keep up the great work!

Sweet!

You added RSS feeds! Thanks so much!

Video Abroad

My family recently had to move to Germany and we miss our favorite PBS shows. Why can't we see the videos outside of the U.S.?

More Masterpiece & Mystery

More Masterpiece & Mystery! I missed this year's lineup and didn't get to the few episodes that were posted, and then taken down. It would be great if they were always up, and if past seasons were available too.

Also, the regular viewing size is too small. At full screen it's very pixellated. A middle ground between full screen and the regular viewer size would be perfect.

I am so excited about PBS video! Thanks!

CEO Exchange

Hi there. As an educated fan of PBS from across the Atlantic in London, I am writing regarding the brilliant: 'CEO Exchange,' I was wondering if you could tell me whether another season was ever broadcast after season 5? If yes, would you be so kind enough to point me in the right direction with a link to the Season 6's episodes, or somewhere I could purchase/download the season as a podcast? Either way, I would be ever so grateful. I only ever managed to download Seasons 4 & 5 via iTunes and would love to know whether Seasons 1-3 were ever made available via iTunes? Look forward to hearing back from someone. Do keep up the great work. Many thanks.

The Great War

I really enjoyed "The Great War" series you did about 10 years ago with Jay Winter's book. Also you used Paul Fussell a lot in it. It was a less miltaristic cultural history and I;'d love to own it or see it again.

Masterpiece & Mystery

Anything PBS airs is above and beyond what the average television stations offer but Masterpiece is definitely a favorite. Its truly an experience seeing classic books brought to life and Andrew Davies is a top caliber Artist. I'd also like to see Art 21, American Masters and Nova.

Hubert Keller

Hubert Keller has recently become a favorite chef of mine and I was wondering if any of his shows are aired in Western North Carolina? If not, are DVD's of his shows offered on line for purchase?
Thank you,
Gary

MI-5 Please

I just moved from Colorado to Virginia and have apparently lost access to a very good BBC product - MI-5. It would be great if you could add it to your video offerings. Thanks.

Square One

Will you please make Square One available for viewing, download, or purchase?? I want to be able to see the old episodes!

Looking for the Christmas Eve Vienna program.

I think the conductor was Bierbohm.

More Shows and Linux

I am surprised by how little is actually available for online streaming on PBS today - so I'm glad some progress is being made. My request: Please, please, please don't allow PBS to get locked into Microsoft. I use Linux and am a PBS addict - so don't forget me and open systems on this journey. Thanks.
