"Five Good Answers" from Antiques Roadshow host Mark L. Walberg
Last week on "Five Good Questions" we featured one of the most recognizable faces on PBS.
Mark L. Walberg, the host of Antiques Roadshow, has been in television for twenty years. These days, viewers watch him every week on PBS as he travels the country with the Roadshow team.
So if you are a game show enthusiast or an antiques collector, we think you'll enjoy Walberg's answers to these five good questions. Read them here and tell us what you think.
I would like to know how the choice of location for the road show is made. Is it because of city size? population? facility? How does one go about suggesting a hometown for location? Margaret Lowe
How does one go about suggesting a hometown for location? A. Roadshow travels to six cities each summer, and the primary determinant of where we go is whether or not there's a venue big enough to accommodate our production (we need at least 75,000 sq. ft. of space) and equipped to handle the technical aspects of the production. Then the facility has to be available on the dates when we tour in June, July, and August. The good news is that new convention centers and exhibit halls are being renovated or built all the time, so our options keep expanding.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to begin working in your career field? Greg Palmer
Truthfully, I usually try to discourage people from getting into the business. It can be cruel and is certainly unpredictable. If, however, it's a life-long dream for someone, my advice is to learn as much about television both in front and behind the camera and never say no to an opportunity.
Are there any specific types of antiques that you count among your favorites? Alan
I really love musical instruments and sports memorabilia. Lately, I've been hanging around the pottery and glass tables. All that stuff is so delicate and artistic.
I have items I would like to bring to your show. When will you be coming to the New York City/New Jersey area? Marie Colasurdo
I'd love to visit the New York/New Jersey area! But Roadshow's itinerary for the summer 2009 tour is still in the planning stages and will be announced in January. Please check the Antiques Roadshow area of pbs.org after the beginning of the new year for more information on the summer 2009 tour, including how to apply for tickets.
What is your favorite part about your career? Greg Palmer
I guess my favorite part is that you never know what's next. It's a constantly changing work environment and, for the most part, it finds me working with people I really enjoy. I'm truly grateful for that.
