Five Good Questions for Antiques Roadshow host Mark L. Walberg

This edition of Five Good Questions is dedicated to the 11 million people who tune into Antiques Roadshow every week.

The highest-rated series on PBS, Antiques Roadshow is now in its twelfth season. As host, Mark L. Walberg tours the country with the Roadshow appraisers, who determine the value of objects Americans present to them, from family heirlooms to recent yard-sale finds. You can see a behind-the-scenes video of a Roadshow event here.

No newbie to television, Walberg has worked in the industry for 20 years, both in front of the camera as a show host and, more recently, behind the lens as a producer.

In addition to Walberg's work on Antiques Roadshow, he dedicates time to improving the lives of young people in his community. He serves on the Board of Directors of Goodwill of Southern California and collaborates with The Young Americans, a musical performance youth group that offers music workshops in underserved schools.

Our weekly Roadshow guide is here to answer your questions. Walberg can't tell you how much your great aunt's lamp is worth, but he can definitely tell you more about the making of the show and working in television.

Leave your questions for him in the comments. I'll pick five good ones and we'll post his answers in the coming weeks.

Mark, you have hosted quite

Mark, you have hosted quite a few game shows over the years. My question is: Is there any game show out there that you would like to host someday, and why?

Another possible show

With a success of the game show "Paquet Vauleor" in Quebec, have you thought about hosting a US version of this show called "Trade Up" where one of eight contestants can win anywhere from $1 to $1 million? You'd have to watch it in Canada on SRC to see how it's played.

location

I would like to know how the choice of location for the road show is made. Is it because of city size? population? facility? How does one go about suggesting a hometown for location? Thanks much.

In what cities will Antique Road Show appear in 2009

How do I get tickets to the show and how many objects amI allowed to bring

show

i would like to be on your show when it comes to denver, but, i can't seem to log on for the appliation. can you please let me know where to find it

Game Shows

Mark,

What classes that you have taken have been of greatest benefit to you?

What resources were of greatest benefit to you that may also be helpful for me?

What is your favorite part about your career?

What do you wish you had known about campus life and/or your career before now?

What advice do you have for someone who wants to begin working in your career field?

Thanks.

Other PBS shows?

Hi Mark,

If you could host one other show on PBS, what would it be and why?

New York City Visit

I have items I would like to bring to your show. When will you be coming to the New York City/New Jersey area?

New York City

Hi,

Thanks so much, Evelyn Payne

Russian Roulette

Did you like hosting GSN's Russian Roulette and would you want to do it again?

Do you collect?

Do you collect any antiques yourself? Have you ever had any of the appraisers on the show take a look at something of yours personally?

local visitsa

Mark,

I was wondering where one must go to find out your travel schedule and locations, so one could plan to attend your show locally. Also would like to know if you sell tickets to your shows, or if it is first come/first serve basis, and how you determine WHICH attendees are chosen to receive an appraisal of an item.

"Test The Nation", Favorite Antiques

The TV game show you hosted that really interested me was "Test The Nation" (which also aired on FOX), because of its very strong audience participation factor (the home viewers could play along for free with the studio audience and group panelists, and it made you think a lot more than other TV game shows). Are there any plans to bring "Test The Nation" back in the near future?

Also, are there any specific types of antiques that you count among your favorites?

Thanks.

Antiques Roadshow repeats

Why are there only repeats of the "Antiques Roadshow" this season?

Lost family artwork

Around 1914, in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, my mother, Adeline, and her sister, Kathleen were invited to sit for two watercolor scenes by an itinerant artist. It was a nice summer afternoon, and the girls posed first as playing Croquet. Then as one sitting doing knitting (as I recall the scene) with the other standing nearby. Each "portrait" would measure about 14" wide and 16" high. These pictures eventually belonged to my Mother and then were handed to me.
While I was in the process of selling one home and moving to my present home near West Salem, Wisconsin. There was a breakin, and a man from Beloit, Wisconsin stole many treasured things of our family, including these two pictures. His name is Sorensen, and his "business" practice was to travel out to various areas in Wisconsin burgling homes while the owners were away for extended periods of time. I was away in Naples, Florida at the time. He would return to Beloit and consign his loot to various auction houses and dealers in that city pretending, for the record, that he had purchased and collected these items legitimately. This went on week after week, month after month, as one auction house payment records show.
He was apprehended soon afterwards because he still had in his possession all my Lionel train items which could be positively identified. Everything else had previously been sold at auction and dispersed out of State. Fro the 3 jobes he did in the La Crosse area that week, he was sentence to 18 years in Wisconsin Prison. He refuses to reveal where and to whom he transfered these pictures and the many guns and other things that this auction house do not record.
I believe that this activity is widespread in the "collectibles" industry and that it would not be unusual for any specific item offered for evaluation in the pre-production of your show events. I am wondering whether there is any assistance that your organization could be in the idenification and recovery of this kind of stolen property. For instance, do you keep photographs and statement records of many items brought in beyond those chosen to appear in the weekly program ? Is there an "archive" of this material ? Do you have suggestions for possible tracing and recovery of stolen property like this ? Do any of your expert appraisers have conversations with business or insurance "agents" qualified to pursue these issues?
Any help along these lines would be greatly appreciated.

Antiques Galore

Would your show ever consider coming into a19th century home filled with antiques that are "one of a kind" and determine their value? The owners travelled the world for the company that would soon become MACYS....they were buyers for this company and never had children. He was French and she was American. He has since passed but his wife is now 97 and the history that she unfolds over all that they purchased throughout the years is incredible.
From Tiffany to Belter....Stueben and Wedgewood and more....this home contains a world tour of antiquities!

American Teddy bears

I would like to know what the most rare childrens toys are that have been on the show, especially if they are stuffed toys, Bob
