The Hot Sheet: June 15-22

Sometimes it’s best to focus on the big picture; other times, details reveal a larger truth. This week, PBS encourages you to look a little closer.

  1. Frontline illuminates the out-sized global economic crisis by focusing on the inner struggles of one organization: Bank of America. The series’ season finale, “Breaking the Bank,” has exclusive interviews with top bank executives and key players of the United States financial system, and airs on June 16th at 9pm ET (check local listings). After watching the program, you’ll have the chance to delve even deeper into the issue by submitting your questions for the show’s producer, Michael Kirk, in a live chat right here on PBS Engage, on June 17th at 11am ET.
  2. Chess is an intricate game, and love is a detailed enigma; when you combine the two, you get “Chess in Concert,” a night of great music from Great Performances. International singing star Josh Groban, Wicked’s Idina Minzel and Rent’s Adam Pascal bring a story of love, and a chess tournament, to life in this revival ABBA composers Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ hit-packed pop-rock score. Watch a preview of the concert shot in London at Royal Albert Hall, and an interview with Josh Groban, before it airs on PBS stations at 9pm ET on June 17th (check local listings).
  3. Put the pieces together yourself at the end of the week with Masterpiece Mystery’s “Hercule Poirot Series IX: Cat Among the Pigeons.” The 90-minute tale of murder, international espionage, a revolution in a foreign land and a missing princess stars David Suchet in his recurring role as super sleuth Hercule Poirot. The show is the first in the “Six by Agatha” series on Masterpiece, highlighting celebrated mystery author Agatha Christie, and airs June 21st at 9pm ET (check local listings).

Independent Lense - Ask Not!

I was really glad to hear on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross that PBS' Independent Lense had made a documentary about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and was geared up to be home to watch either WLRN or WXEL show the doc. What a disappointment to see that WLRN has not planned in this doc for atleast the next two weeks and WXEL will only show it on Thursday at 4 am!
Is this homophobia? Do the south Florida stations not feel that there are people here who are interested in the subject? This week is Gay Pride in Fort Lauderdale. I am going to make sure that the subject becomes public.

Cost of Health Care

During coverage of today's debate in the Senate on health care reform the only mention of cost was about the cost of the proposed changes. Never was there any analysis, or even mention, of the costs of the present broken system and how it might compare with the proposed program. Can we please have some intelligent fact finding and critical thinking. We know that this mess is bankrupting the nation. Why do you let the Republicans get away with propaganda!!
