The Hot Sheet: November 8-14

PBS honors its veterans this week in remembrance and tribute of their service to the nation.  We celebrate Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11th) with two new shows highlighting servicemen and women and those that support them.  The PBS Video Portal also features several archived shows that honor the United States’ military members.

  • Join Secrets of the Dead in remembering “The Airmen and the Headhunters” of World War II in an exhilarating adventure through the jungles of Borneo.  When a Japanese anti-aircraft shoots down a U.S bomber, the pilots find themselves in unchartered wilderness, unexpectedly assisted by the Dayak tribe, a people known for its unruly and uncivilized way of life.  Watch a preview of the true story and tune in on Wednesday, November 11th at 8pm (check local listings) to see the outcome:

  • Welcome to Bangor, Maine, where a dedicated group of senior citizens tirelessly welcome troops returning from the Middle East to U.S. soil, regardless of the time of day.  For 5 years, the committee has offered welcome home celebrations to over 900,000 servicemen and women, with signs, hugs and cellular telephones to call loved ones.  The remarkable film tells the story of three greeters that work to provide the unexpected service to the military as they struggle with their own battles of aging.   Watch a preview of P.O.V.’s The Way We Get By (Wednesday, November 11th at 9pm, check local listing:

  • Tune in to the PBS Video Portal to watch full episodes of Carrier, the 10-part series that shares life aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Nimitz through the eyes of first time sailors, experienced airmen and the officers that control the floating city.  The video portal also showcases the America at War collection that includes comprehensive coverage of the American military abroad from FRONTLINE, NOVA, Bill Moyers and more.
