The Hot Sheet: October 18-24

Music is in the air at PBS.  Take your front row seats to the Los Angeles Philharmonic as a new young superstar assumes the conductor’s baton. Meet the composer of one of the most rousing and emotionally ranging symphonies of all time.  Dig deep in the PBS Archives to find a rollicking rock performance by one of America’s musical legends.  No matter your musical taste, there’s a show for everyone.

  • Gustavo Dudamel has been called one of the most dynamic and influential people in the world – quite a description for a 28-year-old conductor.  Great Performances invites you to his inaugural performance as Music Director with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Wednesday, October 21 (check local lstings).  To prepare, download two free tracks of Dudamel’s music.
  •

  • The Holidays Symphony is a musical rollercoaster of sweeping emotions and twisting juxtapositions of sound.  Keeping Score travels to New England to explore the life of composer Charles Ives to uncover the personal stories that make up the chaotic piece that includes movements inspired by Thanksgiving, the 4th of July, Decoration Day and Washington’s Birthday.  Watch a preview online.

  • 35 years ago, Willie Nelson played on a little show called Austin City Limits.  Now in its 35th season, the stage has showcased some of the finest rock musicians in the world in intimate and personal shows.  PBS Video presents Nelson’s first performance on the show from October 17th, 1974 starting Saturday, October 17th.  Nelson returns to Austin City Limits in November to commemorate the anniversary.
