The Hot Sheet: September 13-20

Celebrate history, heritage and heroes through documentary, comedy, and short form film or share your own story by simply picking up a video camera. This week, PBS celebrates the art of film with three features that highlight the ever-changing genre.

  • WGBH Lab, NOVA, and PBS Engage invite you to share your story inspired by the upcoming NOVA series focused on Darwin and evolution in an open call (beginning Monday, September 14th) for short videos.  The NOVA’s Becoming Human airs in November, but start filming your personal stories now.  Upload your video and watch, rank and comment on others.  You may even get a chance to have your film broadcast on air.

  • Meet heroes Tresa Dunbar and Kerry Purcell.  They don’t wear capes or have secret powers, but they are real life heroes – they’ve dramatically changed the course of two American public schools using passion and unique teaching styles.  P.O.V.’s Principal Story (Tuesday, September 15thcheck local listings) follows Dunbar and Purcell over one school year as they shift their schools from desperate to dramatically improved.

  • Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Nuestras Historias, a video collection dedicated to the diverse history and rich culture of Hispanic Americans.  Meet legendary rock guitarist and songwriter Carlos Santana or crack the centuries old code of the Mayan language.   Go inside the border controversy with episodes from NOW on PBS and FRONTLINE.  The collection also features 60-second snap shots of Latino culture – from hip-hopping abuelas to a playful take on the serenade.
