How to Experience South by Southwest Without Leaving Home
Once a festival for music industry insiders to get out of their studios on the coasts and hear the hottest new independent bands, the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas has expanded in recent years to also include showcases for film and online innovations.
In fact, "South by" - as those in the know call it - has become so tech-forward that there are a number of ways to participate in the festival online, without leaving home.
Here on PBS.org, Engage will be streaming live performances by Paul Dateh, David Kitchen and Austin legend Alejandro Escovedo.. We've also recruited Zadi Diaz and her production partner Steve Woolf of EPIC FU fame (and the Engage advisory board) to host live video chats with such digital media luminaries as venture capitalist Guy Kawasaki and Stanford professor Lawrence Lessig, along with filmmakers Curt Ellis and Ian Cheney ("King Corn"). In addition, PBS will host a live chat with Terry Lickona, long-time producer of the famous music series, Austin City Limits. And on the film side, PBS producers P.O.V. and the Independent Television Service will be covering the festival on their blogs.
"We hope to get some diverse perspectives on social media trends and how public media can leverage emerging technologies," said Jayme Swain, Director of PBS Engage, noting that PBS staffers will also be covering the festival via Twitter and on the PBS website.
Beyond PBS, the web offers a number of opportunities to experience SXSW remotely . The official SXSW Twitter feed is keeping attendees and interested users in the know about everything from panels to cupcake bakeoffs. The festival is also offering a "people browser" to help conference-goers network and customize their festival schedules. And social media company imeem got a shout-out from Wired for its guide to the fest, a round-up of music, video and photo playlists from most, if not all SXSW events.
Keep your eye on this space for updates and events over the next week. And let us know what you want us to cover while we're in Austin.

Online vs Live
Sounds great another step forward innovation for fast human communication. However there is no way you can replace the atmosphere and experience of being at a good festival in the flesh, no matter how fast your Internet connection is!
Nice
I wish people were streaming more video of the Winter Music Conference that was happening in Miami. I love sxsw, but also thoroughly enjoy the WMC. The nice part is that you can catch the days activities on youtube sometimes minutes after a performance.
Props to PBS for bringing it to the people.

Boxing the compass is the action of naming all thirty-two principal points of the compass clockwise order. It was also used in naval slang as a description if a ship slowly revolving in a calm sea in a "directionless" manner, thus pointing through all of the compass points, sometimes reversing itself. If you post them often, and they're good enough, people could be getting installment loans for your next podcast. You can generate revenue pretty easily with a podcast that people are interested in. Some podcasts are so hot that people get short term loans to sign up for them. If you have valuable information, it's easy to generate money; you don't want to give out a free podcast for what people should pay you for.
