PBS Nominated for Five Webby Awards

Movies have the Oscars, TV has the Emmys, music has the Grammys, and the web, well, the web has the Webbys. There may be less paparazzi and fewer designer dresses, but the annual awards offer an opportunity to take stock of some of the innovation and best practices happening across the web.

This year, PBS scored five nominations, for program sites like POV, the overwhelming online appeal of Frontline's Bush's War and web-exclusives like Frontline/World's iWitness blog.

In the documentary category, Frontline/World's Kenya: Sweet Home Obama episode earned a nod. "When I read the story of Obama's father, I marveled at how his story paralleled mine, even though we grew up in different generations. We were both born in Nyanza province, sons of estranged fathers. But somehow we both managed to rise above this and excel in American institutions of higher learning," journalist Edwin Okong'o writes on the web site. The site also includes video and feedback from readers about the short film.

KCET's production of Andrew Jackson: Good, Evil, and the Presidency was recognized as an "official honoree." The site provides an interactive timeline of the controversial President's life, video features from the series, and teaching tools to use in the classroom. Official honorees is a designation given to only 15% of the over 10,000 nominations for sites that "excel across the board."

Beyond PBS, Epic Fu, a web-based show from Engage advisors Zadi Diaz and Steve Woolf, was nominated in the video blog category. And Why Tuesday, which participated in the PBS/YouTube Video Your Vote project, was nominated in the activism category.

I think this is a pretty

I think this is a pretty cool idea. I like the prgression of the Internet and how it is gaining even more attention. This also gives people a good indication of what the great websites are out there. Nice stuff!

Webby Awards

I think Obama's campaign site was an awesome piece of work. I didn't hear about it winning any awards though... did it?
