PBS Web Sites Give Users Rare Glimpse Into Chinese Culture
Enjoying watching the Summer Olympics on NBC?
What's wrong with you? You should be watching PBS!
Just kidding. (Kinda.)
But seriously: You can supplement your Olympics experience by checking out the following PBS sites.
• "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" has devoted a section of its site to coverage of China's preparations for the games, including reports on China's record on human rights and the challenges facing Chinese media, as well as an archive of reporter Paul Solman's memorable 2005 series on the country's rise.
• "Frontline" offers sites devoted to two recent documentaries: "China in the Red," a two-hour film that puts a human face on the nation's efforts to modernize its economy; and "Young & Restless in China," a look at how young people are coping with China's social changes.
Both sites offer streaming video, a discussion board, essays, a behind-the-scenes features and more.
• The "Nightly Business Report" site archives "China: Century of Change," a 2005 five-part series that examines the nation's economic transformation.
• The site for PBS's international documentary series "Wide Angle" offers a preview of "China Prep," a forthcoming film that examines the high-stakes, high-pressure world of Chinese academia.
• The site for "China Blue," a recent entry in PBS's weekly "Independent Lens" documentary showcase, takes users behind the scenes of the film, which shows how international clothing companies rely on cheap labor in China.
• Also from "Independent Lens" is a site for the film "Please Vote for Me." This documentary takes you inside an elementary school in central China, where three eight-year-old students participate in first election for a class leader to be held in China.
