They Have a Dream (About Barack or Hillary)

The pitched battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is the stuff of dreams for political junkies. In fact, the Clinton-Obama race seems to have burrowed its way into the subconscious of a lot of folks these days.

For proof, look no further than I Dream, a site dedicated to collecting peoples' dreams about the Democratic contenders.

Sheila Heti, a 31-year-old Toronto author and inventor, set up the site after talking with a friend, who told her she'd had a dream about shopping for Tupperware with Clinton. Suspecting that other people might be having similarly presidential dreams, Heti solicited postings on blogs and MySpace pages before launching her dream site.

So far, it seems Clinton and Obama are running neck and neck in the dream world as well. In some dreams, Hillary Clinton is angry and chastises the dreamer. In others, she is warm and appealing. In a surprising number of episodes, the dreamer finds Hillary to be more beautiful than they expected.

One woman dreamt that Hillary took me into the kitchen to have a girl talk, with her favorite dog in arms. The discussion descended into a mundane, uncomfortable conversation about whether or not she should attend the Cannes Film Festival this year."

Obama is often cast as a celebrity in people's dreams, but sometimes, he's an intruder. There are also a lot of anxiety dreams about Obama being assassinated.

In one dream that defies easy analysis, a teacher dreamed that Obama was ringing her front doorbell, but just as she went to answer it, she realized she wasn't wearing any pants. And then, mercifully, the alarm rang.

To keep up with the nocturnal race, you can receive a weekly e-mail newsletter highlighting the latest reported dreams.
