The Year of the Monkey

2008 is not the year of the monkey in Chinese Astrology (it's actually the year of the rat), but it sure feels like it here at PBS.  Last night NOVA aired "The Last Great Ape," an exploration of humans' closest cousins, the peaceful (and sex-crazed) bonobos.  Other monkey shows that have aired on PBS as of late: NATURE's Murder in the Troop about Zimbabwe's baboon tribes earlier this week and Clever Monkeys last month.  I realized this love affair with monkeys started before 2008; the PBS Archives is full of "monkey business." Here are my top five monkey features on PBS.org:

  • Think you're clever?  Offer up a caption for this photo on NATURE's "Clever Monkeys" photo caption challenge.
  • Make a sandcastle with PBS' favorite primate. The Curious George game Day at the Beach is harder than it seems.
  • Interact with NOVA's Family Tree to see if you are more closely related to a chimpanzee or an orangutan
  • Explore the Bronx Zoo Gorilla Forest, home to Snowflake, the only known albino gorilla.
  • Watch a monkey feed himself with a robotic arm, operated by his own brainpower. The monkey's ability to control the prosthetic device is an important milestone for scientists researching the human brain's ability to adapt to robotic devices.

Chimps in Space!

Another monkey (or close relative of the monkey) program this weekend: Nature's Chimpanzees: An Unnatural History. Did you know they were our first astronauts?

Monkey Business

I absolutely love monkeys. There's a program on UK Sky called 'Monkey Business'. It's on in the afternoons daily and follows the keepers at an animal park and shows what the monkeys get up to. Cheeky wee beggers hehe. Great!
