Local PBS Video Goes National

PBS station WHYY caught up with Tom Hanks on the red carpet at the Philadelphia premiere of “Angels and Demons.” Unless you live in the Philly area, you probably missed the interview, which aired on the station’s local film show, Flicks.  Soon, though, you’ll be able to see high quality local productions like this one from across the nation, thanks to the local/national aggregation power of the PBS Video portal.more

PBS Releases First Chumby Widget

Chumby may be a funny name for a company, but as a product, we think it has the potential to bring a lot of great content to new people (and places). If you haven’t heard of Chumby yet, well, that’s not surprising -- it hasn’t been around for very long, and has largely been in the experimental stages until recently.

So what exactly is a Chumby? It’s both a platform - a way to build portable web site features called “widgets” - and a product : a cute little alarm-clock-shaped device that has an iPhone-esque touch screen. PBS Engage is proud to have recently released the first Chumby widget for PBS a couple of weeks ago (many thanks to PBS developer Shawn Rider for helping us get started), featuring headlines from the Inside PBS blog.

The Roundup: Pelosi, Chinese Geometry and Broken Records

Does Nancy Pelosi know who's running Russia?

That was one of the debates that erupted in PBS's corner of cyberspace this week.

During an Aug. 11 appearance on "Tavis Smiley," the House speaker said she was disturbed by the timing of Russia's invasion of Georgia, which occurred at roughly the same time the Olympics opened in Beijing.

"It was interesting to me to see the news talk about the invasion of Georgia while Putin was just sitting there at the Olympics. There was something wrong with that picture," Pelosi told Tavis. "People were being killed, and Putin is sitting in the stands at the Olympics as if nothing is going on."

"Foul!," cried visitors to YouTube's PBS Channel, where the clip was posted.more
