Did I mention he's also a philanthropist?

On his nightly talk show, Tavis interviews newsmakers and entertainers from all walks of life, from President Jimmy Carter to singer Donna Summer. more

The presidential candidates are back on the campaign trail, so let's take a look at how the locals in Denver participated in the convention while the nation was watching.  Tomorrow, a look at the local online voices in the Twin Cities.

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) swept through Denver last month, yielding hundreds of hours of media coverage.  Yet, few media outlets offered a window into the impact of the convention on Denver and its residents.  Local PBS member station Rocky Mountain PBS offered just that window on its Panorama website, where community members shared their convention experiences and political opinions. more

Roundup: RNC Coverage Feedback Spurs Nostalgia

Last Friday in the roundup we looked at some of the feedback and conversations happening on Twitter during the Democratic National Convention. This week people were just as vocal, and maybe even a little more critical of PBS coverage of the RNC. more

A Week of Firsts

The first few days of the Democratic National Convention have been a whirlwind tour of colorful characters, high tech media equipment, and political discourse from experts -- from former Defense Secretary William Perry to rocker Melissa Etheridge.

For many of us here with PBS' interactive team, including Online NewsHour, Tavis Smiley's Young Voices, and PBS Vote 2008, it's our first time at a political convention. Taking in the sights and sounds of Denver during this busy week has been just as consuming as learning about the political process of nominating a presidential candidate.

Young Voices blogger Tomika Thompson gave a photo glimpse into her first day in Denver, talking to delegates who were also experiencing their first convention, like Jackie Petty from Peoria, Ill: more

SuperSisters: Three Voices on Parenting

Our friends at PBS Parents have launched a new site offering a fresh design with guides, activities and discussion forums.  The site includes a blog by child development experts and story building activities for even the youngest child-producers.

The Supersisters' blog is written by three sisters who have eight children between them.  Sisters Jen Lemen, Kristen Hammond and Patience Salgado spend their days raising kids ranging in age from 10 to not-yet-born.  Each sister has a distinctive, honest voice that mixes anecdotes with lessons from their trial-and-error lives as moms.  more

The Roundup: Pelosi, Chinese Geometry and Broken Records

Does Nancy Pelosi know who's running Russia?

That was one of the debates that erupted in PBS's corner of cyberspace this week.

During an Aug. 11 appearance on "Tavis Smiley," the House speaker said she was disturbed by the timing of Russia’s invasion of Georgia, which occurred at roughly the same time the Olympics opened in Beijing.

"It was interesting to me to see the news talk about the invasion of Georgia while Putin was just sitting there at the Olympics. There was something wrong with that picture," Pelosi told Tavis. "People were being killed, and Putin is sitting in the stands at the Olympics as if nothing is going on."

"Foul!," cried visitors to YouTube's PBS Channel, where the clip was posted. more

The Roundup: Covering Topics From Poverty to the Future of Journalism

That chatter you hear is the sound of folks in PBS's corner of cyberspace sounding off about the presidential campaign.

But unlike the rest of the electorate, it seems as if users at Vote 2008 and other PBS sites are focused on the issues.

Pretty novel concept, huh? more
