International Weblog Awards Transcend Language and Borders

Since 2004 the Best of the Blogs (BOBs) have been recognizing the top blogs, podcasts and vodcasts internationally.  Deutsche Welle, Germany's public broadcaster, organizes the awards.  PBS' own Mark Glaser was on the jury.
The BOBs challenge judges from all over the world to evaluate the abilities of bloggers creating content in 11 different languages.

"I think a common element among the winners is a sense of universality, a blog that can transcend language or cultural barriers," Glaser said. "To win the votes of judges who come from around the world, you need to demonstrate that the blog you nominated is special and stands out."

This map on the BOBs web site shows a sampling of this year's submissions. Voices of Africa, a site that aggregates community-generated journalism from over 30 African countries, won Best Videoblog. Users produce the site's stories using mobile phones and wireless Internet.more

HoustonPBS Embraces Spirit of Openness during Hurricane Ike

One week ago tomorrow Hurricane Ike slammed into the Gulf Coast, knocking out power for over 4.5 million people in the Houston and Galveston, Texas areas.

As Hurricane Ike was slowly crossing Houston I checked HoustonPBS's Web site to see what the station was doing (I have family who live in Houston so I was looking for any and all information I could find). HoustonPBS had already put up a banner at the top of their site linking to a small Web page full of information and resources for their audience. more

PBS Vote 2008: Our Campaign Kick-Off

Hey, wouldn't it be nice if someone gathered all public media coverage of this year's election and put it in one place on the Internet?

Someone has.

PBS Vote 2008, a site that draws news stories, video, online tools and user comments from public television and public radio sites across the nation, launched yesterday.

"There are tons of places online to get breaking news, but it can be hard to find context and analysis. This site provides all of PBS's in-depth reporting in one place," says Laura Hertzfeld, content manager for PBS Vote 2008.

Today the site features links to "NewsHour" correspondent Gwen Ifill's exclusive interview with presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, an "Election Connection" blog entry on the role of public television's minority reporters at this year's political conventions and links to such sites as the "American Experience" presidential page.more

Eternal Sunshine of the White-Bread Mind

In recent weeks, University of Brighton professor Tara Brarbazon has described Google as "white bread for the mind," bemoaning students' inability to vet online sources found in search engine result lists.

Brabazon's concern is that every piece of online information seems equally valid to her students, who are, she more
