About the Film

Islands is a dialogue-free fable that tells the story of Vaine - a beautiful young woman trapped on an island with Putu, her brutish 'protector'. Each day, she briefly escapes his attentions and goes to the strait that separates their island from Tamatoa’s island; Tamatoa stands on the opposite shore and they share a gentle, word-less love play until Putu finds out.

Vaine escapes her brutish 'protector' and shares a daily word-less love play with Tamatoa.

About the Filmmakers

This team of filmmakers from all over the globe are taking part in a social and economic development project set in the tropical south pacific destination of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Its aims are to build the capacity of local filmmakers by proving an opportunity to work along side professional filmmakers such as Tajinder Hayer and his colleagues.

Presented by Pacific Islanders in Communications

Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) is dedicated to supporting, advancing, and developing Pacific Island media content and talent that results in a deeper understanding of Pacific Island history, culture, and contemporary challenges. In keeping with the mission, PIC helps Pacific Islander stories reach national audiences through funding support for productions, training and education, broadcast services, and community outreach.

The Film Raro challenge brings teams of filmmakers from all over the globe to take part in a social and economic development project set in the tropical south pacific destination of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.  Its aims are to build the capacity of local filmmakers by providing an opportunity to work alongside professional filmmakers to produce short films.  The films produced, the knowledge and experience shared will raise the capacity of Cook Island storytellers to then tell their own digital stories to their people and the world.  Learn more at www.filmraro.com
