unity temple

pon entry, one gradually penetrates the building’s multiple layers, each time turning to one side or mounting several stairs. The congregant eventually enters the sanctuary from below, emerging from a dark gallery into a brilliantly lit space surrounded by balconies. The journey becomes a physical spiritual one from darkness to enlightenment. Wright’s desire to build a house of worship expressing the powerful simplicity of ancient religious edifices inspired his request that it be called a “temple” rather than a church. Unity temple was completed and in 1906 is one of the earliest public buildings constructed of concrete.
