There was a time when travel meant discovery, adventure and the shock of the new. But the modern travel industry serves to keep people apart as much as it does to bring them together. People may travel more now than they ever have, but they’ve lost touch with the journey.

The subjects in these videos have reclaimed a basic human need: to move through the world seeking authentic connection that will jolt them out of the complacency of their ordinary lives. For Steve Wanta, it meant ditching a desk job to seek a career in global microfinance. For Josh and Jessa Works, it meant selling their house and permanently traveling across North America in an Airstream trailer. For Pascale Boucicaut and Lamar Bailey Karamañites, it meant leaving behind their lives in New York City to open a laid-back traveler’s hostel in the Caribbean. And for Taylor Colins and Katie Forrest, it meant creating a protein bar that would allow them to extend that feeling of transcendence they get on an extreme bike trip. The travel may have very different purposes, but the individuals are all on an authentic journey.

To journey means more than getting on a plane, or a bike or climbing into a trailer. You’re discovering who you authentically are, at the core, and you’ll do whatever it takes to fulfill that purpose. It might not always be easy or fun, but it’s always real.
