Decision 2012: Cake or Pie?

Its election week in America! To celebrate, PBS Food is hosting our own election to decide one of the oldest debates in the world: Cake or Pie? Each candidate poses a worthy platform.

On one side, a soft, moist cake is one of the most versatile and delicious desserts around. It can be decorated elegantly for a wedding or high-class event. It can be shaped into a fun, silly cartoon character (like say Curious George) for a child’s birthday. Cake can be paired with ice cream, has spawned the biggest dessert craze of the 21st century (cupcakes!) and has even been put on a stick!

Pie stakes its claim on its wonderful fillings — from cherries to raspberries to apples to pumpkin to chocolate — the possibilities are endless. While cake and ice cream is good, a warm piece of pie a la mode is definitely superior. While cake takes the edge with birthdays, pie clearly leads when it comes to holidays — pumpkin pie is synonymous with Thanksgiving and apple pie is the All-American favorite for Independence Day.
