Kelly Carlisle grew up in the crime-ridden neighborhood of East Oakland. She joined the U.S. Navy, and has returned to Oakland where she is making a difference in her community, by farming. Hear her story.
After serving as an Operations Specialist in the US Navy and Navy Reserve, Kelly came back to East Oakland, ready to give back.
She bounced around jobs for a while, until she found gardening. Farming, gardening and growing, she claims, made her a better person.
Kelly realized that growing food and teaching others about eating healthy food could be way to give back to her community.
In August of 2010, she founded Acta Non Verba (Latin for “deeds not words”): Youth Urban Farm Project, a non-profit urban farm that focuses on serving at-risk youth from kindergarten to 8th grade.
