Winter has always been a special time to me, a season for family to gather together and celebrate old traditions and new beginnings. As a child, my brother Franco and I looked forward every year to celebrating the holidays with the Christmas traditions kept alive by our grandparents. Ripe pears and nougat were our favorite holiday treats, along with the edible decorations adorning our tree. Now as a grandmother of five children, I delight in teaching them about our culinary customs.
Knowing how significant food is to my own memories of the holidays, I was excited to bring this same feeling of warmth and comfort to the service men and women at Naval Station Norfolk. The honor of cooking for them is something I will truly never forget.
