Julia Irene Kauffman is Chairman and CEO of the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation, whose mission is to support the performing and visual arts in greater Kansas City, and Chairman of the Board of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, which opened in September 2011. Her civic and philanthropic activities include serving on the boards of the Kansas City Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and the Kansas City Ballet. Since 1997 she has also served on the board of directors of the Kansas City Royals Baseball Club.
In 2011, the Downtown Council of Kansas City presented Kauffman with its J. Philip Kirk, Jr. Award for Community Vision and Downtown Stewardship. Also in 2011, Kauffman received the Marion and John Kreamer Award for Entrepreneurship in Volunteer Community Service, presented by the Council for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Henry W. Bloch School of Management, and was named Outstanding Kansas Citian by The Native Sons and Daughters of Greater Kansas City.
Kauffman joined the board of the PBS Foundation in 2013.
