I condemn false prophets, I condemn the effort to take away the power of rational decision, to drain people of their free will — and a hell of a lot of money in the bargain. Religions vary in their degree of idiocy, but I reject them all. For most people, religion is nothing more than a substitute for a malfunctioning brain. —Gene Roddenberry, creator of the Star Trek series

My Beliefs

I believe ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I believe in truth, knowledge and the scientific process. 1 person liked this
My most powerful moment of belief was ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator The day that it really clicked that life is a wonderful and terrible series of coincidental events, further randomized through actions taken by people who many times think little about the ramifications of the things they do.
My greatest moment of doubt was ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator When I was six years old I picked up a bible and scanned through it reading a couple verse from every book. That was when all doubt was removed from my mind and knew we were here simply through biological and environmental chance. Before then, I was agnostic.
The biggest misconception about my faith/belief system is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator That we are immoral and untrustworthy. The most honest and genuinely good people I know are Atheists.
The tenet/practice/teaching I appreciate most about my faith is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Do what is right, not for threat of punishment or promise of reward, but because it is the right thing to do. 1 person liked this

My Faith History

As a child I believed ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Until the age 6 I was agnostic, reading through the Bible made it quite clear that religion is man made and an instrument of control.
I was raised as ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Family tried to raise me as Christian, but the more involved they got me the more certain I became of the truth.
If you have children, did becoming a parent change your relationship to faith? If so, how? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Having children has definitely introduced new challenges such as protecting them from the indoctrination that society in general is ok with.

How I Practice My Faith

How easy or difficult is it to live your faith? Why? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator It goes along with the saying, "Everything I need to know I learned in kindergarten." Do what is right and honest. If everyone lived by that we would have much fewer problems in the world.
In my house, the thing that most represents my faith is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator The flag that flies on the front of my house. The ultimate symbol of this country that allows for anyone to believe as they want and creating a democratic society based on the population as a whole, instead of a theocracy.
The song/book/film that most represents my faith is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Book; God; The Failed Hypothesis, by Victor Stenger. Song; Marilyn Manson, The Fight Song

Religion & the Public Square

What should be the role of religion in politics? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator As a lesson how not to run a country. Bigotry, homophobia, sexism, these are the fruits of religion.
Should courses about religion be taught in public schools? Why or why not? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator As an elective definitely but it must be presented with balanced and impartial coverage of all major religions.
Should the Bible, Torah, Quran or other religious texts be taught as works of literature in public schools? Why or why not? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator No. Everything I was ever taught regarding sentence structure and grammar tells me the books could only be used as an example for bad writing.
Is interfaith dialogue important? Why or why not? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Yes, but it never changes anything. There will always be extremists to ruin the world.
Do you feel comfortable discussing your faith with others? Why/why not? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I do, mainly because the information I am able to share with those gets them to think critically if only during the few minutes of conversation.
Do you feel that you have a duty, because of your faith, to put your beliefs into action? What are some of those actions? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Duty is presented not by faith but by personal desire. I want to do what is good for humanity and the world.
Are religious beliefs compromised by engaging in politics? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Quite the opposite, politics is compromised by engaging in religion.

Do you feel more/less comfortable expressing your religious beliefs? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Every day that passes reinforces my understanding of the world, some like 9/11 provides additional support to that understanding.
