How Do You Imagine God?
God in America and USA WEEKEND Magazine are partnering to explore Americans' images of God.

How do you imagine God? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I imagine God as being a dark and shape shifting cloud in the otherwise clear sky of human potential.

My Beliefs

I believe ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator that the human brain alone is fully responsible for the creation and evolution of all religious (God) beliefs. I also agree with Mr. Hitchens when he says that "Religion poisons everything".
My most powerful moment of belief was ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator hitting the "send" button of my email to my former pastor requesting a refund of my financial donations to the church. I'll never forget that moment. http://unreasonablefaith.com/2010/03/10/how-i-got-a-refund-from-my-church/
My greatest moment of doubt was ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator when I first learned that the stories of the Bible (old and new testaments) were merely a retelling of more ancient versions of earlier myths.
My spiritual life means... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator that I now see a new purpose for my life. I feel a deep obligation to try and help dispel the myth and superstition that is weighing us down as a species.
The biggest misconception about my faith/belief system is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I am ridiculously optimistic that we will eventually shed our delusions regarding the supernatural.
My spiritual role model is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator The term "spiritual" is the term people use to describe the cloud of denial that we hide in to avoid the undeniable fact that we will all some day cease to exist. The same can be said for the term "god".
The tenet/practice/teaching I appreciate most about my faith is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I could be completely wrong.

My Faith History

As a child I believed ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator virtually anything that adults told me.
My spiritual journey has been ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Born into religion (Catholic), long period of youthful rebellion and "searching for truth" culminating in a fear driven surrender to Christian Fundamentalism. The next phase was a deep and honest examination of my then core beliefs, which eventually led to my current position (atheist).
I was raised as ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Roman Catholic
Are your beliefs or practices different from your parents? If so, how and why? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator They were not terribly religious. If they were still alive, however, I highly doubt that they would be able to understand my atheism. There would be too many layers of encrusted falsehoods to undo.
If you have children, did becoming a parent change your relationship to faith? If so, how? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Being a parent was and is the most motivating force in my quest to understand and live in the "real" world. The truth is passed from generation to generation - the same can be said for myth and superstitious misinformation.

How I Practice My Faith

Where and when do you practice your faith? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator My beliefs are the foundation of my choices throughout every moment of every day.
Does your family practice more than one religion or faith? If so, how do you blend the traditions? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator My siblings and I are an amalgamation of atheism, christian fundamentalism, new age super naturalism and Mormonism. We don't bring up the subject of religion.
How easy or difficult is it to live your faith? Why? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator It is hard to witness the effect that some forms of religion still has on our world. Especially in light of my confidence that all of these actions from religious people are built upon a shared delusion. Still, it is at time extremely uplifting to also see the incremental progress that humans are making in the journey towards a global emancipation from the chains of ignorance and religious superstition.
In my house, the thing that most represents my faith is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Books and information.
The song/book/film that most represents my faith is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator book - "To Kill a Mockingbird", song- "Imagine" by John Winston Lennon.....oh, and....film - "Napoleon Dynamite".

Religion & the Public Square

What should be the role of religion in politics? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Strong separation of church and state.
Should courses about religion be taught in public schools? Why or why not? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Yes, teach about all world religion, including non-theistic beliefs, in public schools. It will be the comprehensive study of the history of religion on our planet that will bring the realities regarding religion into proper focus.
Should the Bible, Torah, Quran or other religious texts be taught as works of literature in public schools? Why or why not? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Yes, teach about the variety and history of religions beliefs.
Is interfaith dialogue important? Why or why not? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I think that all people of faith should find a way, through discussion, to live together.
Do you feel comfortable discussing your faith with others? Why/why not? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I'm very comfortable talking about my beliefs. After all....I'm right. Right? ;-)
Do you feel that you have a duty, because of your faith, to put your beliefs into action? What are some of those actions? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Yes I have an obligation to pass my beliefs to the next generation. I have struggled to untangle the mess of myths and misinformation that I was taught from childhood, and the work was well worth the effort only because it will be my kids that will reap the greatest benefits of my effort.
Are religious beliefs compromised by engaging in politics? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I would certainly hope so.
Has 9/11 had any impact on your thoughts about religion? Are you more/less interested in learning about other religions? Do you feel more/less comfortable expressing your religious beliefs? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator 9/11 was what inspired author Sam Harris to write "The End of Faith". This opened the floodgate on the topic of Atheism....and the water is rapidly rising.
