Men never commit evil so fully and joyfully as when they do it for religious convictions ~ Blaise Pascal

How Do You Imagine God?
God in America and USA WEEKEND Magazine are partnering to explore Americans' images of God.

How do you imagine God? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator To best explain why I don't believe there is any sort of god I can easily turn to the wisdom of my 5 year old son. When he asked who god was I told him exactly this "Some people believe that there is a deity living in the universe that not only created you and I but everything in the universe and he controls it all the time and watches all that you do. So every leaf every tree everything was made by him" My son laughed and said Momma that's crazy, seeds make trees, some trees make leaves, your and Daddy's DNA made me, and your the boss. If even a 5 year old can see the insanity in all of this it makes me seriously question the adults who actually believe this could be true.

My Beliefs

I believe ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator in reason, in logical thinking, in science and all of it's amazing advances, in myself and my family and the natural world that surrounds me.
My most powerful moment of belief was ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator When I realized that belief in myself was enough. That I am the person controlling my destiny and my life and that is empowering. It makes me responsible for all of my actions and choices and that never would I be able to ask someone else to forgive me, to make things in my life right for me, but that it's up to me to live right everyday and to be truly responsible for my own actions.
My greatest moment of doubt was ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator When I realized the hypocrisy of the others around me... How you can pick and choose from a book that on one page says it's ok to own slaves and beat women, force women to marry men who had raped them, and on the next hand says these things come from a "loving god" who will have to forgive you because he sent his only son to death so that you could be forgiven. If you preach and practice this book, you should preach all of it, not the the pages you feel are relevant. What if a doctor read a medical book and picked and chose pages because the whole book did not matter just those pages he thought were right? What if he were wrong what if he killed you because of those mistakes? I feel the same way about the bible, you put your heart and soul into a book you've only read the last half of or have not even read in full. That just strikes me as a whole other level of crazy...
My spiritual life means... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Sharing science, reason, logic and skeptical thinking with everyone I can. To stand up for the separation of church and state and secular society as was intended by our founding fathers. To raise my children to have pride in themselves and the things that they do as they and only they are responsible for their own actions.
The biggest misconception about my faith/belief system is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator that I have no morals, that I believe in "the devil" that I'm just lazy about religion and that's why I'm not religious. In the most recent survey done you'd be surprised to know me and those like me know more about your religion than you do. I hate that people distrust me more that most groups who live in the US and some people actually think that I should not be allowed to be a citizen because I don't believe. That Atheists don't think that you should have your religion, and that's crap. We would be the first to stand up for your right to have those beliefs though we don't want them in our government, in our schools or on our money.
My spiritual role model is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator The planet Earth and the universe surrounding it. Science and critical thinking. Other leading Atheists and Skeptics who have a louder voice than I do: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Neil Degrasse Tyson and the like I admire these people for doing everyday in every way what I wish I could.
The tenet/practice/teaching I appreciate most about my faith is ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator This poem best describes what I feel about my Atheism: ~Atheism is... by Richard Coughlan~ Atheism offers nothing to me, it never has and it never will It does not make me feel good or comfort me It is not there for me when I’m sick or ill It can’t intervene in my times of need and it wont protect me from hate or lies It doesn’t care if I fail or succeed It won’t wipe the tears from my eyes It does nothing when I’ve got nowhere to run It won’t give me wise words or advice It has no teachings for me to learn It can’t show me what’s bad or nice It’s never inspired or in sighted anyone It won’t help me fulfill all my goals It wont tell me to stop when I’m having fun It has never saved one single soul It does not take credit for everything I achieve It won’t make me get down on bended knee It doesn’t demand that I have to believe It won’t torture me for eternity It won’t teach me to hate or despise others It can’t tell me what’s right or wrong It won’t tell anybody they can’t be lovers It’s told nobody that they don’t belong It wont make me think that life is worth living It has nothing to offer me, that’s true… But the reason Atheism offers me nothing is cause I’ve never asked it to. Atheism offers nothing because it doesn’t need to Religion promises everything because you want it to You don’t need a religion or to have faith you want it because you need to feel safe I want to feel reality and nothing more. So Atheism offers me everything that religion has stolen before
